Seriously, a great doco... have only watched about 2/3rds so far, but great stuff.
They do nothing for the image of nerds though, and in particular one of them appears to be the archtype that all nerds have been based on since!

as much as i can say i hate hackers i also love them just as much.if it werent for them most programs i have might not be useable.also hackers help find the flaws no one else could in "operating systems" that i wont name.

Re: The Secret History of Hacking
Why do you hate hackers though? Grouping all people who like to hunt around in computers and find ways into systems into this big collective 'evil' group is a bit naive I think.
True there are those who have the know how, and use it for serious wrongs, they steal money, identities and the like. However those like those in this doco are by and large just in it for the thrill, no malice, no intent to do harm, no real threat to anyone. A lot of those of that ilk tell the companies when they find a way in, let them know that it's insecure so that others, who aren't quite as nice can be stopped.
I have no hate for hackers as a whole, I can really see the appeal to find your way into secret areas. It's only those who do things with personal gain or malice in their hearts that should be disliked.

Sneakers
The 1992 movie "Sneakers" references several of the hackers featured in this documentary. The character Whistler was based on the blind phone phreaker Joe Engressia, and there's even a shot of someone eating Cap'n Crunch cereal, a reference to John Draper.
