Re: Fred Phelps vs the Sodomobile
I am genuinely amazed people can get away with harassing someones funeral or standing in public with such outrageous placards as "Thank GOD for AIDS"...standing around in public referring to people as fags would be a crime under EU law. Is it mostly in the more religious states? Whats the general perception of all this in the US? Seems pretty crazy to me!

Re: Fred Phelps vs the Sodomobile
Freedom of speech isn't always pretty. That's how public porn peddlers got away with their trade for decades. Though I find both bible thumping and hardcore distasteful, I understand their rights to set up shop.

Here in the States, it's typically an additional crime only if in conjunction with another. Then, it's considered a "hate crime". I think something like 35 states have such laws, which of course means that it's not universal.

I won't bother with my getting on a soapbox about the whole problem with religious states.

Re: Fred Phelps vs the Sodomobile
I don't really see how these people publically telling all homosexuals that they're going to hell, are disgusting, are hated by god etc. is in any way the same as some place selling porn.

I suppose I just don't know what you mean by a 'public porn peddler'? A shop somewhere that sells porn? Like in our local city we have a very prominent adult store (called ClubX, I'm in Australia), and I have no issue at all with that, as long as the actual porn pictures are not visible from the outside where children can see, what's the issue?

In this case we have a bunch of people, standing in the street (or worse, going to these poor people's funerals) and yelling at people hateful things about people PURELY because of who they happen to love, and what they do behind closed doors with each other in a loving manner.

It's just disgusting, and I would love to sit down and really try to work out how they can justify these thoughts and actions to themselves.

Re: Fred Phelps vs the Sodomobile
The thing about these people is that they truly exercise their right to free speech, but then are the same ones that are really big into America-bashing. A couple of months ago they showed up in my town to protest the funeral of a man who died in action in the Iraq war.

Now I'm not going to delve into that, but what they were yelling about was that he was going to hell for being in the Army and that God hates America. Luckily, the "Patriot Riders," a travelling motorcycle group with about 300 members present, casually revved their engines every time the Westboro morons started up. And our cops did a great job of keeping them across the street.

What I don't get is that if they hate America, if they hate the "fags" that comprise about 6% of the population (less than most minorities), if they hate the military, if all of America is a waste that's going to "split open the jaws of hell"... why the crap do they have to be here?

I'll go back to watching that video where the crazy lady gets her ass handed to her on Fox News.

Re: Fred Phelps vs the Sodomobile
Confused, would we? Yes, that's hidden.

No, Westy, it's unconstitutional to prevent people from speaking their mind or expressing their beliefs in USA. One advantage of democracy is that everyone gets a turn to speak- even if they don't deserve it, or if we'd rather not hear from them.. I mean, who are we to say that someone else should or shouldn't have a say?

Oh wait. I forgot. We live in a republic. Never mind. I didn't say that.

This inflammatory comment was removed and eaten by George W. Bush.

Re: Fred Phelps vs the Sodomobile
One of the more misunderstood portions of the First Amendment is that although you may have a right to free speech, you do not have the inherent right to do so in the same forum. For example, if Fox News Channel runs a pro Bill Frist editorial and you disagree, you don't have the right to use their network to make your views known. But you do have the right to form your own cable TV opinion network that is masquerading as a news organization to do so.

Re: Fred Phelps vs the Sodomobile
Well, yes. Fox News is a private network. But protesting the picketers of a funeral is just another yankees-redsox game.

Re: Fred Phelps vs the Sodomobile
Don't sweat it. It was just some First Amendment rant. Ain't no getting it back without bothering Jaxon, who is busy enough with more important items at this joint IMHO.

For those who read it, swell. For those who didn't, I was describing that there is no Federal law against such protestations, as distasteful as they may be. I also railed against porn peddlers, as protected by the same US Constitutional Ammendment.

Re: Fred Phelps vs the Sodomobile
I know, right?

I think that critisism against homosexuality is the response to the lack of understanding of homosexuality, i mean, it's just human nature.....unfortanately!

i hope this doesn't get deleted....

Human nature?

Since anger and wishing ill will against another out of anger is also human nature, I suppose that criticism against murder is the response to the lack of understanding of murderous intent. Same logic, no?

Re: Fred Phelps vs the Sodomobile
I'm fairly certain that homosexuality doesn't inherently mean the end of another human being, so, no, it's not the same logic.

I don't think a lack of understanding is the reason for non-acceptance of homosexuality. Rather, it's simply a refusal to accept a difference. That refusal must be seen as conscious in this day and age, because any amount of thought would reveal that another's sexuality does not affect one's self.

For example, George Takei affects me no more by being gay than he does by being of Japanese descent. The only way either of those things could affect me is if I were to deliberately take offense to them.

Oh, and when one party goes home? The other guys won, "hack editing job" or not.

It looks heavily edited, and when they started packing up he edited it to mean a victory for his side. His hack-job story telling is just as bad as his 9/11 video.

Re: Fred Phelps vs the Sodomobile
Just about everything you see on television or theaters is "heavily edited" with only a few exceptions. That doesn't mean that it isn't representative of what happened. Besides, he isn't putting forth the notion that he's an impartial news source.

Re: Fred Phelps vs the Sodomobile
So you're saying if God DID exist, he'd deal with evil in a perfectly clear and obvious manner so that you could understand and be satisfied.

I don't consider myself religious, but I do think that if a higher-power existed, his methods would be more advanced than what we could percieve, let alone judge as just or injust.

Try convincing your dog that it's right for it to only eat 3 meals a day. Poor thing won't understand, it'll just keep being hungry!

I for one wouldn't mind being proven wrong and having God existing as a just being who knows just how to handle a twat like Phelps. Probably could come up with better ideas than I could, anyway.

If God is the creator of all living things, why would He create something He hates?
[ Reply ] [ Flag ] [ Root ] [ Thread ]
Re: Fred Phelps vs the Sodomobile
He didn't. He created free will, and hates decisions with that free will that leads to sin. He allows others to choose to go against him.

So he only hates the decisions that homosexuals make, and not the homosexuals themselves, right?

Oh, and isn't hate a human emotion?

Re: Fred Phelps vs the Sodomobile
Bah, rhetoric fallacy, since love is also a human emotion.

My point is that God doesn't hate his creations.

What I mean is: God is Perfect and therefore made us perfect, but we were given free will to harm people if we wanted to. So I'd say, assuming God had a creator, he did a pretty swell job.
