Two Years Jail for One Joint Sold
A bad law in the US does nothing to prevent the problem and instead punish those who would normally get a misdemeanor conviction and community service as punishment.

For the record, I haven't touched the marihooch in over two decades but it's still a largely harmless product.

Drugs are bad. What's the problem? Dealers should be sent to jail. It might not be as bad as crack or smack, if you ask me the law is too relaxed especially here in the UK.

Re: Two Years Jail for One Joint Sold
I think drugs are bad for people, too. But none of the addicts I know blame drug dealers, nor do these sorts of law keep people off of drugs. If arresting drug dealers got people off drugs, I might be all right with it. But it doesn't. People seek dealers and connects out, not the other way around. The war on drugs hurts people, it doesn't help them.

I think alcohol is far more dangerous to individuals and society than most other drugs, and most people who use it don't have a problem with it. I don't blame liquor stores for alcoholism, deaths due to drunk driving, domestic violence, date rape, or suicide. And to the best of my knowledge, there are hella liquor stores in so-called "drug free zones."

On a related note, there was a great article in the May/June issue of American Scientist magazine, vol. 93, no. 3, page 206, called "The Toxicity of Recreational Drugs" by Robert S. Gable. The author looks at the amount of a drug needed to get a person under the influence as compared to the amount that will kill a person. See the last page for the "Ratio of effective dose to fatal dose" chart.

I forgot to mention something. There is a better solution than mandatory jail sentences. Prop 36 has been working well in California, offering treatment instead of time for certain offenders. If people mess up with their alternate sentences, they get the time they were originally spared. No, not everyone kicks a drug habit, but more people get help than before. Cheaper, more effective, more humane, and more just.

While Boogie responded in a much more intelligent manner than I ever could, I don't think the message of this clip is that more people should be doing drugs, that drugs are good or that dealers pose no risk.

Re: Two Years Jail for One Joint Sold
I hope I didn't come across as saying I think it's cool to sling dope, because I don't feel that way at all. Selling drugs is a fucked up way to make money or support a habit, and makes a person a parasite living off of the misery of others. Fucked up, and a crime in this country. But (this much dope + this geographical location of sale = this much time) is not a solution.

Re: Two Years Jail for One Joint Sold
Nice answer Boogie, but I still disagree! I agree whole heartedly though about the alcohol statement, I hate the way the whole of society revolves around a drink culture.

I am nearly 30 now, I was 16 when I started smoking marijuna and also drinking alcohol. Up to the age of 24 I have tryed nearly every drug available while also drinking almost every night socially. I have now been sober for the last 5 years. I have suffered with depression, anxiety and paranoia. Also due to the amount I use to drink I developed early liver scirosis. I was able to give everything up on my own, which was hard but I did it because I wanted to. I have seen friends die and become addicted to crack and smack. I would honestly say that I dont know one person who is sober like me and most people who I know do 'recreational' drugs at least once a week. I am the only person I know who doesn't drink!

The sentance he has recieved would surley put him off dealing again and send a message out to others to not do it. After all it's only marijuna, after he has started earning easy money from that, what will stop him selling harder drugs in the future? I know a lot of dealers too and to be honest they just laugh at the law, most of them started off by selling a little amount of dope too. I may have a bias view but have seen it first hand. Sorry to go on but this is a good debate!

Re: Two Years Jail for One Joint Sold
I agree with the sentiments Aphex is making.

I'm a Brit too and the drink culture in our country is absolutely horrendous, so is the drug culture. I'll admit to experimenting with drugs before like hash and marijuana and to be honest i didn't enjoy it, it just made me lightheaded and dizzy and uncoordinated. I think the whole point of the video though was to say ok, these laws obviously don't work so maybe we should look at trying to prevent kids going onto drugs than the dealers who are dealing, i mean the kids doing drugs today will probably be dealing them tomorrow, perhaps maybe we should cut off the cycle first.
