Film intros using the THX sound, originally named 'Deep Note.' The sound itself was created in 1982 by Dr James 'Andy' Moorer on a mainframe at Lucasfilms using 20,000 lines of C.

Here's a link that has a little more information about it, including an explanation of the program he created and how it never actually made the same sound twice because it used random number generators. They just happened to like this version.
