The famous car chase scene from Bullitt, starring Steve McQueen and that beautiul green 1968 Mustang GT 390 Fastback.

Not entirely believable but still a great clip from the days of old. Exciting by today's standards butnot heart-pounding. Back then, it was state of the art and people flocked to the theatres to see such action. See Gene Hackman in The French Connection for similar beauties of chase scenes.

Re: Bullitt: Car Chase
Ah, I have to slightly disagree here. An element that takes this car chase to another level is the fact that Steve McQueen is actually behind the wheel of that Mustang.

Also, this is THE watershed car chase, setting the first great standard. French Connection, from three years later, is another great one of course, but for your consideration, the next paradigm shift, IMHO, was Raiders Of The Lost Ark, followed by Terminator 2 (specifically the truck and the Harley) and finally Matrix Reloaded.

Ronin was excellent, of course, but it wasn't a reinvention of the car chase, rather it was the most polished version of the old school.

Speaking of which, To Live And Die In LA (also by the French Connection director, William Friedkin) wasn't too shabby, either.

Ah yes, I love movies.

Niktemadur:

Road Warrior came out the same year as Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and was much more ground-breaking in terms of the evolution of the car chase. It also includes plenty of truck vs. motorcycle action, so I don't really see Terminator 2 as pushing the boundaries of the car chase genre. The Harley chase scene in T2 was pretty sweet, though...

I always loved that car chase scene in To Live and Die in LA. Going up the ramp the wrong way and then onto the freeway was insane!

Yes, Steve-o always did his own stunts. What a nut job! But hey, that's his thing - come to think of it, I would do it too given the chance.

That whole scenario was totally believable.

I will hafta to add the film Death Proof to the current crop... I have never been on the edge of my seat so much during a car chase as I was during that film. The simple fact that during the entire chase that is Zooey on the hood of the car with little to no safety gear just gets your heart pounding in fear for her... It really added that axtra human element to what would have just been a pretty good chase.

A classic in its own right but dated by today's standard. Ronin definately surpasses it.

The car, on the other hand, will never go out of style.

BTW, I never knew that cars back then had a 26 speed gear box...that's a whole lotta shiftin'

Thus began a long tradition of EVERYTHING exploding.

First film where the camera was positioned on the dash, I think.
