Re: Colbert at the White House Dinner
Rather than pulling a trump card, he just tosses out the whole deck. Brave of him, entertaining clip.
I'd be extremely curious to know how the hell he got the gig though.

Re: Colbert at the White House Dinner
"That Colbert fella is real popular at the moment, new show on TV and eveything. We should book him."
"Uh, sir. Perhaps we should find out where he stands on the issues before bringing him in."
"Stands on the issues? He's a comedian. He dosen't stand anywhere. Now get him or... Nuclear tantrum starting in 5... 4... 3... 2.. 1-"
"Ok! ok! Get that Colbert guy!"

Having "guts," as he so eloquently put it, doesn't make someone brilliant.

Re: Stephen Colbert Roasts Bush: Part 1 of 3
Colbert doesn't have guts. He has balls.
Re: Stephen Colbert Roasts Bush: Part 1 of 3
"guts"? i guess it does take "guts" to make an ass out of yourself

I didn't say he was brilliant, I said this is brilliant. As in this video.

Re: Stephen Colbert Roasts Bush: Part 1 of 3
Some of the jokes are from his show. I heard them already...he just changed the context.
Re: Stephen Colbert Roasts Bush: Part 1 of 3
Gawd, I can't stand people who repeat the same material over and over again:

Same goes for people who plagiarism themselves:

Re: Stephen Colbert Roasts Bush: Part 1 of 3
I was just saying - some of his first few jokes in the first video were repeats to me. Makes it not as good as I wanted it to be. I don't get your point though...I liked the disney shots and the bush speech joke links.
Re: Stephen Colbert Roasts Bush: Part 1 of 3
Just using this as an excuse to reference more related links. :)

Are you sure it wasern't an exuse to plagiarism yourself?

Look, comedians repeat jokes. Sorry, it happens. And you can't "plaglarism" yourself. It's your stuff.

Re: Stephen Colbert Roasts Bush: Part 1 of 3
Bush has been protected for years by a kind of false civility that has prevented people from publicly calling him on his B.S.. Colbert's roast is another indication that this protection has fallen away. I really hope it's gone forever, and Bush with it. ITMFA
Re: Stephen Colbert Roasts Bush: Part 1 of 3
Think again. They say above that Bush didn't like this, but the evidence leads to him WANTING this.
This clip, for example:
http://www.milkandcookies.com/links/45151/details/
Bush ridicules himself. He takes part in a skit that clearly stabs at him and his administration. He took it all in stride.
Now, if you were iffy about Bush, and watched that clip, seeing how 'funny' he was... wouldn't you approve?
This roast was intentional, and I'm not going to be suprised if there's a boost, however small, in his approval ratings from it.

Re: Stephen Colbert Roasts Bush: Part 1 of 3
I agree that a small boost in the approval ratings might result from the Dinner in its entirety.
However, please take the following into account : George Double Bush was a play on the President's personal mental and intellectual deficiencies. It spent inordinate amounts of time on already half-comical subjects. It had nothing more important to jest upon than Cheney's shooting skills.
Colbert, you see, adressed *real* issues. He was courageous. He was fantastic. Bush and his impersonator were as disgustingly close-mouthed and hypocritical as usual.
I agree with you. Perhaps Bush /did/ want Colbert to be on. It would be right on par for his astounding imbecility.

Re: Stephen Colbert Roasts Bush: Part 1 of 3
This got a lot more laughs, and rightly so, than the Colbert piece, and gives one a glimpse of the warm, decent human being hiding inside the terrible president.
Unfortunately, well, he's still a terrible president.

Re: Stephen Colbert Roasts Bush: Part 1 of 3
I think part of the reason that people laughed more is that it feels too uncomfortable to laugh at someone unless they are laughing themselves... the two bush clip was a situation where the audience knew they were supposed to laugh, but Colbert caught them off guard and they weren't sure. I'm sure many of them were just trying to stifle laughter.

Re: Stephen Colbert Roasts Bush: Part 1 of 3
If you are referring to the lack of laughter by the people AT the dinner... then duh... dumass... Truth hurts even when lightly disguised as comedy. I laughed alot and I was extremely proud to say "I liked Colbert" even before this. Now, he absolutley deserves a Nobel Prize for journalism. He had an opportunity to confront the beast and, like David (the guy with the sling - duh again), he put on one hell of a performance. He did not cowar and he did not yield. He is without a doubt in my mind, the bravest man on the face of the planet.

Re: Stephen Colbert Roasts Bush: Part 1 of 3
The whole "Bush the Semiretarded Man-Child" meme is what covers up his administration's disregard for the country's wellbeing.
Re: Stephen Colbert Roasts Bush: Part 1 of 3
I am sick of people jumping the fence on issue after issue. If only most of this country wasn't forced into a role of accountability like most of our leaders are. Bush is doing what he can with what he can. He's not performing brilliantly. But public displays of disrespect like this one by Colbert right in front of our commander in cheif dont sit well with me.
I used to think the guy was slightly funny. Now I know he's just willing to say anything and everything to incite people.

Re: Stephen Colbert Roasts Bush: Part 1 of 3
Please, go on about how Bush's limited resources, support, and control resulted in an uphill challenge for his administration over the past five years.
Re: Stephen Colbert Roasts Bush: Part 1 of 3
not so.
I was commenting on the amazing ability of millions in this country to be for the war in iraq before we started, and pending negative press coverage and a prolonged campaign, they just simply switch. And act like they never wanted to go into Iraq in the first place. Sure, there have been tactical mistakes made, and sure, some of the intelligence turned out to be wrong, but we had to make the same tough desicion that the administration did before the war. They just don't have the luxury of switching. Stand by your desicion and our troops , peepull.

most of the intelligence turned out to be wrong, fabricated, or brushed aside if it didn't coenhere with the plan of invasion that was invisioned well before 9/11. Tactical mistakes were big ones. Not coming in with enough troops, not antisipating gurella warfare from those fearing invasion, not equipping our soldiars with enough armor and supplies to keep them safe, and totally misjudging how long we were going to be there.
And yeah, we do have the luxury to switiching sides, cause we were duped, and we're pissed. We support our troops 100%, which is why we want them OUT, out from a country we had no business in and had no solid reason to occupy, and still dont. we want them home and we want them safe. We want this stupid war to be over and we want to see heads roll for the mistakes that were made that caused 2000+ american deaths, thousands of american casualties (a casualty includes those mamed or disabled via combat, not just dead) and the hundereds of thousands of iraqi calualties as well as deaths. And bush has the nerv to say he just doesn't think too much about Osama. You can like his morals, his peronality, and maybe even his economic policy, but he's a shit commander of our troops with crappy foreign policy and he picks shit people to run everything else. People have been physically run out of office by a mob for less.

Re: Stephen Colbert Roasts Bush: Part 1 of 3
I, for one, am getting tired of clips of Bush and Colbert. (I said "clips of Bush"...heheh.) We need some other politician to make fun of...and Cheney sure tried his durnedest earlier this year. We also need some other self-righteous smug-aleck to heckle politicoes. Colbert has jumped the shark; he needs to go into retirement or get some new material.
Re: Stephen Colbert Roasts Bush: Part 1 of 3
We will have another politician to make fun of. In 2008.

Re: Stephen Colbert Roasts Bush: Part 1 of 3
The President is a public figure and the corrispondants dinner is a roast. Bush obviously in not beyond contempt by a good majority of Americans who feel unspoken for. Stephan Colbert was obviously applying his rights as an American quite eloquently. Whether one agree's or not or whether he redid some of his previous material.Hardly matters..What was done (does)
