Orson Welles: Drunk Paul Masson Outtakes
Watch it twice.

The first time you can watch Orson drunkenly slur all his lines with the cadence of a Pakistani Beat poet and the second time you can watch the actress on the left halfheartedly try not to laugh.

Dude is annihilated, I’m telling you.

You have never been that drunk in your life.

The most shocking thing about this commercial is not how drunk he is but how hopelessly determined the director is to get a half decent take.

Funny, but terribly, terribly sad that such a genius was reduced to pickling his brain w/bad wine from Modesto while having to hawk it.

I used to work at that place in Modesto, many years ago. The pickle juice wasn't as bad as all that. It got the job done.

Hey, a little something I know a little something about! Kewl!

The real tragedy for Welles was the fact that Hollywood shunned his talent out of petty resentment. Coming from completely outside the system with Citizen Kane, blowing everything and everybody away, the asshole Hollywood egos never forgave this ultimate maverick, never gave him a chance.

The last straw for Welles was the corporate tampering and ultimate butchering of his magnificent Touch Of Evil, banished to theaters' b-movie time slots back in the day, and late night television screenings after. Do yourself a great big favor and rent this, one of the greatest of all films.

In fact, what the heck is M&C for? Here you go!

For decades, Welles regarded commercials, or cameos in crappy mainstream films, as a necessary annoyance, a means to an end. He used the income to finance his low budget movies, usually made in France. At least two full-blown masterpieces were done this way, in the sixties - Falstaff and Chimes At Midnight.

As for this "performance", there's anecdotal evidence that Welles was under medication and doctor's orders to stay away from the booze during that period. On this particular day, Welles had a few, less than his usual allowance, but as you all know, liquor and pills do not mix. Hence, the results we see in this video.

Given the fact that the commercial they're shooting is pushing champagne isn't it just possible that this is Orson clowning around? Maybe he liked the irony of appearing drunk while selling booze? Without any other evidence, that explanation is at least as likely as the possibility that he's actually drunk.

Wouldn't be surprising. He was known as a prankster who told outrageous storied and performed magic tricks at parties. There's an episode of I Love Lucy where she gets hired on to do a trick with him at a benefit and he ends up playing the straight man to her insanity. He pulls it off beautifully!

Since he's getting the dialogue right, just mucking it all about, it's a fair shot that he's just irritated with the whole thing and trying to amuse himself.
