What the Bleep: Quantum Physics
This animated experiment shows the really mysterious behavior of quantam particles.

Electrons behaving like waves and then like marbles? It makes science fun again.

From the movie, "What the *bleep* do we Know?".

I thought everybody knew that quantam particles are female.

Re: What the Bleep: Quantum Physics
JUST A WARNING TO PEOPLE:

Although you dont get any sense of it from this clip, the "movie" it comes from was produced by the religious cult - The Ramtha School of Enlightenment.

Also, although this clip explains quantum superposition in quite an elegant way ;), the full "movie" is a heady mixture of pseudo-science and complete rubbish (such as the human body is 90% water...!?). And just about the only genuine physicist they feature has been quoted as saying that what he said was edited as such to completely change its context.

Re: What the Bleep: Quantum Physics
hmm. i didnt know about the observation part of the double slit project. im now curious as to how the observation was done.

Re: What the Bleep: Quantum Physics
In the early experiment a weak source of light was used, pointing at one of the slits.
This lead to the objection that the two bands obtained with the additional detector were the effect of the measures being too invasive.
Subsequent experiments used non invasive methods, still reproducing the two bands figure.

I second that give us more sentiment.

Re: What the Bleep: Quantum Physics
If waves and particles both create a single band when shot through one slit, what makes them sure that light shot through one slit wasn't a band created by a wave? Then light's just a wave both times.
I should remember this from physics but I don't.

Re: What the Bleep: Quantum Physics
It is because the particle theory and the wave theory give the same answer to the one slit question. Thus, the one slit experiment is just a preliminary test.
Simply stated: if it failed, both theory would have been wrong.

Re: What the Bleep: Quantum Physics
So what is the contradiction that light behaves like particles? I'm sure there is one, but they don't list it here...Without a contradiction wouldn't this experiment tell them that light behaves like waves only?

Re: What the Bleep: Quantum Physics
There is no contraddiction in that.
But notice that the double slit experiment were performed on electrons, that are (supposed to be) particles but behaves like waves, sometimes.

Re: What the Bleep: Quantum Physics
No, when a wave goes through the single slit, it produced a gradient, with the strongest markings in the center, then weaker and weaker going outwards. With particles, it creates a solid, unbroken stripe, without that gradient.

Re: What the Bleep: Quantum Physics
Great introduction to just one of the fascinating aspects of QP. I recommend Brian Greene's "The Elegant Universe" and "The Fabric of the Cosmos", two books on the subject that even a layman like me can understand (mostly).

Re: What the Bleep: Quantum Physics
I am in the process of reading this book right now. It's an awesome book. But I'm getting into the quantum physics stuff now and it makes my head hurt. This stuff is just too weird (but still cool!)

I meant to say I'm reading Fabric of the Cosmos. I may have to pick up his other one though when I get done.

aside from the cheesy 3d animation that was pretty cool. i wish more stuff like this was shown in classes

have any more?

Problems With What The Bleep
There are problems with the What The Bleep movie, although this segment shown here is not the problem. The movie makes lots of other claims:

I wondered where all of that spiritual bullshit was coming from. Thanks for the link.

*Sigh* At least Marlee Matlin was nice to look at.

Re: What the Bleep: Quantum Physics
... And so when we take the square root of the equation F = MA and + that to the velocity of an object going downhill by a force of 50N with a friction of 0.2, divided by the factor 0.707 with respect to ground in a electrical circuit... We get the exact time it took me to type all this crap down.

... times 120 Jiffys...

I know the voice actors are different, but that guy reminds me VERY strongly of Dr. Breen in Half Life 2.
