So true. I just don't understand credit cards, to be honest... debit cards are significantly more reasonable. I only have a credit card because it's necessary in today's world to buy stuff online.

Here's a tip: Used you credit card to pay your rent/mortgage or student loans. It's just that easy!

Re: Don't Buy Stuff You Cannot Afford
A credit card IS NOT neccessary to make online purchases.

My husband and I regularly purchase the following online using our "debit" cards: air line tickets, hotel room reservations, car rental, books, DVD's, gifts of all kinds, yarn, the list goes on.

Of course, you need to make sure that you are dealing with a REPUTABLE online merchant, and not www.flybynight.com!

Re: Don't Buy Stuff You Cannot Afford
I prefer to use a credit card to pay for things, and then pay off the full amount each month. Yes, this does require a bit of income, but being a tightwad Yankee helps a lot, too. The big difference between a debit card and a credit card is when one gets stolen. If someone takes your debit card and empties your bank account, it's a bit like they stole the money out of your pocket - they have to be caught and prosecuted before you have any hope of getting that money back. If someone takes your credit card and makes crazy purchases, you aren't legally liable for anything more than a total of $50, and even that was waived on all the half-dozen or so times my credit card number was stolen.

Re: SNL: Don't Buy Stuff You Cannot Afford
This was one of the funniest SNL ads I've ever seen--but a little scary, too! Please don't forget that just because you use a credit card doesn't mean you have to pay it off in monthly installments thus get yourself in debt. You can and should pay off the full balance every month. Many cards have no monthly fees and many also have perks related to the amount you charge so if one has the *will power* to use it only for the things one can actually afford and pay for at the end of the billing cycle it can be a good deal. Also easier to see where your money is going since it's all on one piece of paper.

Re: SNL Steve Martin: Don't Buy Stuff You Cannot Afford
This skit is funny - as long as the stuff they're talking about aren't necessities. In the last 10 years the cost of everything has gone up and my paycheck has barely budged. What happens when you can't afford the combination of food, housing, and, the big one, health care. Not so funny then. Try not buying those things.
