In Rob Smigel's "Fun With Real Audio", Jesus struggles to find a modern-day example of good will during Christmas.

Re: Jesus and Christmas
The modern media machine doesn't have the guts to make something like the Charlie Brown Christmas Special anymore. It seems like any sort of biblical (or any kind of religious) reference is stared down upon. Just the other day, I watched an old Sesame Street special, and it made reference to Kwanza, Hanukkah, and Christmas as well, while not pushing or pulling any of them higher than the other. It reminded me how 'taboo' religion has become, all on the account that someone will be offended 'somehow'.
Funny how free speach only works in certain cases.

Mass market consumerism has to appeal to the greatest demographic. Diverse groups are vertical markets with less purchasing power.
A less political example of highest sales stemming from the greatest demographic, is that it's harder to find a major shoe company that makes size 14 shoes anymore.
Charlie Brown celebrated each individual within the group, these days characters in a narrative are more likely to exist only to support the vacuous non-threatening lead.
It's not a matter of free speech, it's a matter of revenue.
We are having less impact voting at the ballot booth, and more voting power with each dollar spent. So spend wisely. Try to understand who you are funding when you open your wallet.
Think of it as another way of looking at "You get what you pay for".

Re: Jesus and Christmas
This is a great, concise summary. I remember listening to a right wing friend complain about how Wal-Mart had removed all references to "Christmas" from it's website and i was stunned at his stupidity. If Wal-Mart HAD done that, it would be for no other reason than the bottom line. And of course they HADN'T done it...it was some shit he'd heard on right-wing talk radio and didn't want to take ten seconds to visit the website and see if it was true, because it's an awesome rush to believe that there is a group called "liberals" who are ruining everything in this country.
Great point about the dollar. Remember it: In our lifetimes, your choice at the ballot box will never come close to impacting your life as much as how you choose to use your dollar. It's the only real vote you have.

Re: Jesus and Christmas
Last time I checked, they still play Christmas music on the radio during the entire month of December in Las Vegas, the city of sin. And even the songs that refers to Christian icons. Last night I saw the pope's Christmas mass in the Vatican, again through corporate media.
The fact that a fraction of companies think that it is more profitable to appeal to the most people possible by cutting out explicit references to Christianity from their products or stores is nothing to cry about.
