Re: Lettuce Help
Andy Samberg is turning this whole show around. Finally, SNL moves into the glorious sketch future.
Re: Lettuce Help
I think you might be dreaming there, but I suppose anything is possible. Notice in this sketch that the crowd didn't find anything funny until the punchline, which was fairly lame. I think the audience laughed because they knew they were supposed to. Pity laugh at best. The writing is just not there, I truly wish they'd stop.
Re: Lettuce Help
I totally disagree. SNL, as I have seen over time, is one of the biggest victims of overblown nitpicking criticism on television and it only gets worse each year it stays on the air. Sure, it isnt always groundbreaking and it is certainly no Mr. Show, where genius is concerned. What it IS, however, is consistently worth watching (this season much more than last) and is generally experimental enough to stay interesting.
Most importantly, it is a venue for some of the best and freshest names in sketch comedy, from Keenan Thompson, to Amy Pohler to my new favorite, Andy Samberg. As easy as it would be to do for a behemoth like this show, it does not forget it's roots. It still makes a concerted effort to pilot sketch comedy in a direction I personally adore and have been longing for, and I will defend it against cynicism for as long as it stays genuinely funny.

Re: Lettuce Help
I just realised a lot of that last post was bullshit. Allow me to backpedal.
I do support SNL, but mostly for personal reasons that most wouldnt understand (I cannot explain why I like Keenan 'Fat Alert' Thompson, but I do). Mind you, I said some true things, but I also said things that just these few hours later I cringe at. I can only defend myself by saying I get a little touchy about the machinations of this 20 year old beast, because at times has stood almost entirely alone in comedy. The potential remains for SNL, but they dont do nearly enough to bring it to complete fruition.

Re: Lettuce Help
At one point, years ago, I might have agreed that SNL was a good stepping stone, but over the past 10 years, it’s done very little in terms of bringing comedic genius to the forefront. Cast members of the past 10 years:
Jim Breuer, Will Ferrell, Darrell Hammond, David Koechner, Norm Macdonald, Mark McKinney, Tim Meadows, Cheri Oteri, Molly Shannon, David Spade, Nancy Walls, Chris Kattan, Colin Quinn, Ana Gasteyer, Tracy Morgan, Fred Wolf, Rachel Dratch, Maya Rudolph, Tina Fey, Jerry Minor, Dean Edwards, Seth Meyers, Amy Poehler, Jeff Richards, Chris Parnell, Horatio Sanz, Fred Armisen, Will Forte, Jimmy Fallon, Finesse Mitchell, Kenan Thompson, Rob Riggle, Jason Sudeikis, Andy Samberg, Bill Hader (I think that’s all of them)
While many of these people have had roles in or starred in movies (most of which were horrifically terrible) only a few stand out as success stories. Will Ferrell and David Spade are the only two with measurable success. Colin Quinn, meh, tries to make something out of himself. Kenan is Ok if you like “Fat Burger”, but “Fat Albert” should have made Bill Cosby slit his own throat. And for those who will argue for Jimmy Fallon, “Taxi” was not a pleasant ride.
I think Tina Fey is very talented and I have no idea why she still associates herself with the show.

Re: Lettuce Help
SNL skits turned into movies, in the past 10 years: Stuart Saves His Family (1995), A Night at the Roxbury (1998), Blues Brothers 2000 (1998), Superstar (1999), The Ladies Man (2000)
No winners there, and they were preceded by The Coneheads (1993) and It’s Pat! (1994). It’s obvious that trying to make features out of crappy skits from SNL should be abandoned.
Most of what I’ve cited is from the past 10 years. 10 years! That’s half of the show’s life.
I think it’s time to take this old, sick and lifeless dog around the back of the barn and humanely put it out of its misery.

I think you need to check your math there, chief.

Re: Lettuce Help
1/3 ... you happy? Tens years is still too long to drag a dying beast just so you can make money off of the advertsing sales. It's the same reason there are so many bad sequels coming out of hollywood, if it can make us a couple of bucks, who cares how good it is. Television and comedy used to be an artform, now it's all about who can make the most money for the least effort. Welcome to America.
Re: Lettuce Help
I agree with gentlesherpa...I have faith in Andy Samberg and friends (Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone) to turn SNL around. If this absurd bit doesn't do it for you, you should definately check out the Narnia video floating around the interweb somewhere. I know SNL has spawned a lot of cynical and jaded viewers, but mark my words, this show is slowly changing for the better.

Re: Lettuce Help
I don't get it. Is there more to it? Or is it funny just because everyone eats lettuce?
If it's parodying something, then I didn't catch the reference.

Re: Lettuce Help
What I noticed is that everyone takes bites of lettuce where they would *normally* take drags of cigarettes.

Re: Lettuce Help
This is one of the skits Snl has come up with that is still funny. I do not know if it's just me but the quality of the Snl skits seem to have been going down in the last three years. Sure they come out with some really funny ones, but the average humor in the skits seem to be on a decline.
