Awesome series of passes in the last few seconds of a football game.
It's a shame the guy coughed up the ball.

Actually that was a touchdown and counted, submitter, as the football broke the plane of the goal line.
But all was lost on the next play, as the extra point was no good.

Re: Amazing New Orleans Saints play
Fortunately for me, I had the Jags that week. I am amazed that I didn't see this in any highlight reel, though I don't pay such close attention to them quite like I used to.

Good freakin Lord. Let's beat up on the lone female here...
I didn't say "forward passes," I said "passes." Sheesh...I'm gonna go watch Lifetime now and eat bon-bons...

Re: Amazing New Orleans Saints play
You're in the minority at this joint but hardly alone. The lexicon of the common football observer is that a pass is thrown from behind the line of scrimmage to a player beyond the line of demarcation. A lateral holds with it a different set of rules regarding reception, muffing one and a play in progress.

You said "muffing"...heheh.
I'd still like to find that clip of Joe Theisman getting his leg audibly snapped. Now that's a moment in sports history that should be relived over and over.
Ooh! There's a Barbara Walters' special on...I have to go brew some chamomile tea and treat myself to a scone.

Re: Amazing New Orleans Saints play
I saw that somewhere recently. Lawrence Taylor was visibly upset over having caused that injury and was frantically calling over the medical staff. I considered it truly not the M&C style because of the gore level.
Still, it couldn't have happened to a more moronic guy. When Theisman is doing commentary on a game, I mute the TV.

Re: Amazing New Orleans Saints play
heya, fyi, it's not, a lateral, is a lateral pass, which is still a pass, a "pass" being the act of "passing" the ball to someone else, be it lateral or elsewhise.

Re: Amazing New Orleans Saints play
I'm not going to split hairs. You are actually correct, however the popular lexicon strays from technical accuracy.

Re: Amazing New Orleans Saints play
ahhh....football. The fact that it's football season can single-handedly be blamed for why I spend less time here at M&C.
I love football with every ounce of my being.
anyhow...
I really don't like plays like this...they are school-yard at best. I will say that it's quite the shock they actually got the ball in this way, as the Saints have been able to do little else all season, and will likely continue to be the piece of shit team they really are.

Hiring Mike Ditka was the biggest mistake by Benson ever made in the NFL. He traded an entire draft choice for Ricky Williams? Gimme a break. OTOH, Haslett did a lot with a little talent and a bunch of rejects a couple of years ago. Problem is that pulling rabbits out of a hat doesn't occur every year.

Re: Amazing New Orleans Saints play
At the moment the main problem with them is Brooks...I've never seen a QB hurt his team so much as this guy.

Re: Amazing New Orleans Saints play
In my mind the jury is still out on Brooks. I don't dislike him as a QB but his feel for the pocket isn't what an NFL player ought to have. Yes, he makes some awful decisions with his tosses but that's the norm. Not everyone can be a superstar and there are but a handful of top notch QB's.

Re: Amazing New Orleans Saints Play
This is similar to the big game between Berkeley and Stanford in 1982. Stanford had just scored and pretty much won the game, and there were only four seconds left. The time cannon went off right after the kick off, but the Berkeley players realized the ball was still in play. They lateraled it back and fourth about five times, with a Berkeley player finally slamming into the end zone in the midst of the Stanford band, which had rushed onto the field when they thought the game was over. Berkeley won. Twenty years later, the student store still sells "The Play" t-shirts, which show the crazy Xs and Os diagram of play, with a little sideways musical note where the Berkeley player knocked down a Stanford trombone player.

I went to Cal and they play that clip before every home game. The best part by far is the trombone player getting whacked in the endzone.

Re: Amazing New Orleans Saints Play
I'm in a college marching band and just wanted to add...I've seen the clip and they shouldn't have gone on the field yet, but it wasn't funny. Oh, who am I kidding, that was hilarious.

Re: Amazing New Orleans Saints Play
Anybody watch rugby? Laterals are one of the few things allowed. That and kicking forward. Still fun to watch it in football, though
