Smurfs are dying for a cause.
UNICEF has created a short, anti-war film depicting "The Smurfs" being annihilated by warplanes and bombs.
It is part of a fundraising drive for the rehabilitation of former child soldiers, and to teach schoolchildren about the horrors of war.

Nice idea, but not enough context. Until I read the description, I thought Gargamel had finally upgraded his butterfly net.

Re: Smurfs Get Bombed
I really have no clue why this has gotten the national attention it has. I mean, yes, the message is poignant and clever (once it is made clear) but the video is really short, and of such a low quality that it nearly makes no sense at all. And I'm not just talking about the M&C copy, but EVERY copy avaliable.
Re: Smurfs Get Bombed
I'm wrong, there is a longer version out there. Sadly I am unable to find a linkable copy of it...
Re: Smurfs Get Bombed
If anyone finds the full version, please let us know. This is the best we could find.
Re: Smurfs Get Bombed
From the UNICEF FAQ:
Can I view it on the web?
Currently, there is no complete version of the original video on the web. In the interest of limiting the opportunities for children to view the cartoon, UNICEF does not intend to publish it on the web. Of course, UNICEF cannot control individuals from boot-legging the spot and publishing it on the web.
~~~
From what I've read, all we're missing is a card at the end saying "Don't let war affect children".
In case anyone's wondering, it's being aired in Belgium, where Smurfs were first created.
Also, there was a more violent one in the works (Smurfs getting their limbs and heads blown off), but the creator's family vetoed it.
Re: Smurfs Get Bombed
Anyone know what they're singing? I have a hunch that instead of the normal smurf song it had some rewritten lyrics to fit better.
Re: Smurfs Get Bombed
I'm glad Gargamel finally realized that if he wanted the job done he would have to contract out the work.
As for an educational tool, WTF?
Where were the educational films where the Smurfs were being led into the ovens? thrown into ditches and buried alive, or fed into the meat grinders?
I guess that didn't warrant a Smurf spin-off?
The Smurfs or the holocaust?
Either way, nothing is sacred in sarcasm.
Re: Smurfs Get Bombed
The Smurfs, I meant. Just think it is a poor choice to use favorite childrens' cartoon characters for this kind of vid.
Re: Smurfs Get Bombed
Yeah, this opens our eyes to war victims, cripes. Now I was a fan of the smurfs when I was a kid, not the Americanization of them but the translated comics from peyo, as was i of the Asterix books.
This is like watching a saturday morning Snuff Film. Absolutely disgusting, there is nothing sacred anymore. And I hope the Peyo's family rots in hell for allowing Uncief to butcher ( literally) a staple of children's literature and cartoon showdom. Next week WWF/peta will have Curious George Experimented on, or Foghorn leghorn put thru a KFC processing plant. I am appalled beyond belief. Tho the curious george i could get into, since I hate f'ing monkeys.. damn dirty apes.
Re: Smurfs Get Bombed
I'll tell you guys what the idea behind the commercial. I've seen the whole version in Dutch and I'll do my best to make it clear in English.
unicef thinks that people don't react to horrible images of warvictems any more. It's like when you see dead bodies on television you think 'How interesting, lets watch MTV.'
so what unicef wants to say is 'is this the only way of getting attention for war victems?'
I hope you understand..
