What was hot 20 years ago? More importantly, how wrong were some of these predictions for future products?

Re: Engadget in 1985
What valuable lesson does this look into the past teach to potential future tech copywriters? Dont write sarcastically about the potential success of any gadget, EVER. You will only end up looking like an ass. A heavily DATED ass.
My favorite is this:
One day in the future we’ll all work at 200MHz tower desktops with 9600 baud modems, but until then we’ll just have to keep dreaming. So while we’re just making crap up, how’s about the Flatpanel Computer mockup, by crackpot “unconventional” designer Jim Leftwich. One little doozy of a pipe dream the computer actually has a flat screen. Whatever, Jim, it’ll happen one day, we SO believe you.

Re: Engadget in 1985
These predictions and comments were written today in yesterday's stereotyped vernacular, completely tongue-in-cheek. Those photos, fonts, layouts? With Windows 1.0 yet to be released? Right. But the first page and the ascii headers are dead-on and made me laugh. Great to see all the old gadgets and realize how far we've come. I remember chatting on Bitnet in 1985, line by line in white on an algae-green screen, rerouting messages somehow if a link went down (unless the link between the US and Europe went down, in which case you were sunk). If you were nice, a chat friend might send you their id file -- a page of text with a lot of ascii doodles and anything they wanted to tell you about themselves. And if you were REALLY nice, they might send you their photo. By mail. In an envelope. With a stamp. Guess I'm officially a geezer. I'm going to bed.
