How the Dutch Got Their Cycle Paths
The Netherlands is well known for its excellent cycling infrastructure. How did the Dutch get this network of bicycle paths?

Bike lanes are everywhere here, as they should be.

Re: How the Dutch Got Their Cycle Paths
As someone who has experienced the Dutch cycling infrastructure, I can assure you that it's completely amazing!

It's not only the fact that there is near-perfect coverage throughout all of the Netherlands (safety), but also the fact that all of these paths are littered with signs. As a foreigner, finding your way is a piece of cake.

France is the worst, Belgium is shit and I'm pretty sure Germany is shit too.

The biggest problems with cycles is snow. A little frozen water and their practicality goes out the window.

I'm pretty sure they clear the snow for people and bikes, not just for cars.

But you can never be too prepared:

That's not entirely true. Spiked bicycle tires for winter work very well, so as long as routes are cleared off, one can get around.

It rarely snows here. During the winter months, the roads may get slippery, but usually not that bad. A lot of the roads, including bike lanes, get salted or are cleared from slippery stuff.
