Pro bassist Jean Baudin, famous for his tapping technique, plays a familiar tune on his 9 string Pac-man themed bass.

I felt like I had to post a link to a detailed picture of his bass since the video shows the inlay vaguely and you can't see the knobs at all.

Re: Jean Baudin Does Mario
Man, does he make that look easy. That is one sweet bass, too. I always wanted a Dingwall (I'm guessing that's what it is because of the fanned frets), although I could do with four or so fewer strings.

Liked it so much we used it for the Headline thumbnail. ;)
Re: Jean Baudin Does Mario
I know it says "professional bassist", and who am I to doubt the validity of something on the Internet, but in my opinion, for someone who's supposed to be a professional, it seemed sloppy and muddled, and the tempo was all over the place.
I'm not saying I could do it...that's just my take.

Re: Jean Baudin Does Mario
you have to take into consideration the fact that he was not just tapping nor your average everyday bass player (i am for example, and couldn't play that for the life of me) but that he was playing BOTH the melody and the bassline together. that's bloody insane in my opinion - two parts, one bass. gorgeous. lol
mega fun too, wish i had my SNES right now...

Re: Jean Baudin Does Mario
I really liked his play, but these Mario-on-a-musical-instrument clips are getting out of hand. Next thing ya know, we'll have a 12 year old girl doing it on a jaws harp or a 98 year old great grandfather of 58 doing it on a wash tub.

Re: Jean Baudin Does Mario
I didn't think it sounded that great. He seems like hes not very skilled with that guitar, because honestly that isn't the hardest song to play, and I know several people that can play it.
Re: Jean Baudin Does Mario
True... but then maybe you didn't notice that he threw in a bass line and a bunch of other stuff on top of the elementary melody that those several people you know can play. Oh, and it's not a guitar. And for the record, I think the japanese guy on the electric guitar takes the milk and cookies on best Mario adaptation, by far.

Re: Jean Baudin Does Mario
you know *several* people who play *that* song. on bass guitar. huh.

Re: Jean Baudin Does Mario
nice, but i recall an asian guy on electric guitar who could do the sound effects as well, like the coin *ca-ching!* and the noise mario makes going down the pipes.

Re: Jean Baudin Does Mario
Ya that was pretty good i could tell he only praticed it once or twice or just heard it if hes pro because of the timing and his momvment and all that but that is skill concidering it has 9 strings and he plays the bass and electric part at the same part at 1 point he played a really hard bass timing part.. oh ya and the pipe and coin effects thats begginer

Re: Jean Baudin Does Mario
Just a few notes to clear up some comments I noticed :)
He did this in a rush as he's very busy and tries to limit his internet/computer time. He seems to spend most of this time speaking to fans when he's invited to amateur musician forums - that's how I found him.
"Sorry, it's not the whole thing but that's just too intense to upload"
^ quote from his site post. His friend had to encod the video for him, so sorry we don't get to hear the 1-up and coin sound effects :P
He also did Bach, much more impressive, really, but I didn't submit it because the video quality's very poor. This is the only other video I've found of him playing, and it happened to be the over-played Mario theme ^^
As a starting bass player I feel I need to point out to people comparing this to the guitar version. The regular bass is 4 string and usually used as a melodic bridge between percussion and harmony. He's playing harmony on a melody instrument and playing a bassline at the same time. That's just baffling to me.

Re: Jean Baudin Does Mario
It shouldn't baffle you too much, keyboard players do it all of the time. Granted, it's a different set up, but it's still two hands doing different things. It's just all about coordination. Drummers tend to be very good at it, only with sticks. Practice, practice, practice.
Re: Jean Baudin Does Mario
Im sorry, but have you ever actually touched a bass guitar in your life. The guy isn't simply fretting the strings down and plucking. He is hammering down the notes, you will notice he is also doing this on his right hand, which most normal players don't ever use to fret notes. Also, add that to hammer on bass strings at that speed is very impressive, considering how thick they are. (again if you actually played bass youd know)
Also, it doesnt sound exactly the same..so what. He's jazzed it up, it sounds groovier and more mellow. The 'crazy effects' that japanese guy does are just simple harmonics that sound cool and look impressive to people who don't know better.
Guys, trust me. This is good.

Re: Jean Baudin Does Mario
The open strings of a regular bass span 1.25 octaves. A regular 6-string guitar spans 2 octaves. But the open strings of this 9-string "bass" span 3.3 octaves, and go almost as high as a regular guitar (within half an octave), so it should be compared with a regular guitar, or nothing at all. In fact, because the range is so much wider, one would expect to be able do more with this instrument.
I watched the Bach performance, and I thought it was atrocious. Half of his notes didn't make a proper sound, and when they did, they were too often the wrong ones. Sometimes this was due to technical errors, but more often, he was making basic errors of musicianship like missing accidentals (i.e. he can't even read the music properly, let alone play it).
