Bill Nye: Creationism is not Appropriate for Children
Evolution is the fundamental idea in all of life science, in all of biology. According to Bill Nye, aka "the science guy," if grownups want to "deny evolution and live in your world that's completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe, that's fine, but don't make your kids do it because we need them."

-- Transcript:

Denial of evolution is unique to the United States. I mean, we're the world's most advanced technological—I mean, you could say Japan—but generally, the United States is where most of the innovations still happens. People still move to the United States. And that's largely because of the intellectual capital we have, the general understanding of science. When you have a portion of the population that doesn't believe in that, it holds everybody back, really.

Evolution is the fundamental idea in all of life science, in all of biology. It's like, it's very much analogous to trying to do geology without believing in tectonic plates. You're just not going to get the right answer. Your whole world is just going to be a mystery instead of an exciting place.

As my old professor, Carl Sagan, said, "When you're in love you want to tell the world." So, once in a while I get people that really—or that claim—they don't believe in evolution. And my response generally is "Well, why not? Really, why not?" Your world just becomes fantastically complicated when you don't believe in evolution. I mean, here are these ancient dinosaur bones or fossils, here is radioactivity, here are distant stars that are just like our star but they're at a different point in their lifecycle. The idea of deep time, of this billions of years, explains so much of the world around us. If you try to ignore that, your world view just becomes crazy, just untenable, itself inconsistent.

And I say to the grownups, if you want to deny evolution and live in your world, in your world that's completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe, that's fine, but don't make your kids do it because we need them. We need scientifically literate voters and taxpayers for the future. We need people that can—we need engineers that can build stuff, solve problems.

It's just really hard a thing, it's really a hard thing. You know, in another couple of centuries that world view, I'm sure, will be, it just won't exist. There's no evidence for it.

Re: Bill Nye: Creationism is not Appropriate for Children
I'll go ahead and agree that Bill is being a dick, even though I agree with him.

Here's another way of making the point he so badly made: How much time was wasted on the church-sponsored assumption that the earth was not the center of the universe?

It's not evolution, per se, he should have been advocating as much as much as the freedom of thought that comes from not putting everything we see through the filter of what we think we know. That...is what wastes time and holds us back.

If people want to think that God kicked it all off and micromanages every process in the universe, that's fine, but if it's revealed to us that the truth is more complex than words written on paper for a 1000BC-500AD audience, all that is asked is the consideration of accepting the new revelation, and perhaps even be thankful for it.

I think I'm saying the same thing as you when I say that it's important to teach kids how to think. That's where school falls down. Do they even teach logic anymore? I think that used to be a standard class in the early 1900's. Not anymore.

I don't think so. And in college (at least, at the state college I went to), logic is an elective philosophy course. I think the schools fail and culture fails there. Not only is it not valued, but it's actively resisted.

I still can't get over the Republican Party 2012 platform that includes: "Knowledge-Based Education – We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) (values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs that are simply a relabeling of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) (mastery learning) which focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the student’s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority." --http://s3.amazonaws.com/texasgop_pre/assets/original/2012Platform_Final.pdf

Normally, I would just sigh and say "That's just Texas being Texas," but this is the state is large enough that it has a significant influence on textbook standards in other states. It's ignorance trickle-down, only the "trickle" is a gross understatement, and this is only one example of many anti-educational cultural biases.

Sorry, that second paragraph should have read "Texas Republican Party 2012 platform."

Thank you for posting that rebuttal. It's the funniest thing I've seen in weeks.
