Not Working?
A contestant on a Japanese gameshow gets shot over a lake with pressurized water bottles strapped to his back.

Re: Japanese gameshow madness
This is one of the coolest things I've seen in the world!
Water Bottle + Bike Pump + Japanese Dude = Jetpack!
Try this at home!

I like how at the end he's "rescued" with a rainbow pool ring.

Re: Japanese gameshow madness
Recently, my class went to go and launch bottle rockets. OH MAN, I TOLD MY TEACHER IT WOULD WORK! HA!

Re: Water Bottle Jetpack
It's kinda scary to think the same people that try stuff like this, also build a majority of the worlds leading technology lol

Re: Water Bottle Jetpack
A testament to "outside the box" thinking? Or maybe this is how they weed out the dumb ones.

Re: Water Bottle Jetpack
It's a game show... i mean compared to the stuff americans do for money (fear factor, eating things, putting things in themselves, etc...), a free flight over a scenic lake is an easy price to pay.

Re: Water Bottle Jetpack
I'd pay to do it. And this guy probably won something good for doing something I think would be cool :(

Re: Water Bottle Jetpack
You never had one of those water-air pump rockets as a kid? Liquids don't compress very easily. But gasses do. By pumping all that air into the water, an amazing amount of pressure is built up. This is especially true when it is released through a narrow nozzle like the top of a bottle.

Re: Water Bottle Jetpack
I didn't ask for the science.. I wanted to know simple things like: how did they pop all those caps off at once? And how did they hook up the bike pump to allll of those bottles at once?
im still a kid i guess

Re: Water Bottle Jetpack
Okidokee. Ya got me how they popped the caps off all at once. I'm a theoretical guy not a practical sciences guy.

Re: Water Bottle Jetpack
Well I don't really care THAT much..
[and nvrmnd that second question]

Re: Water Bottle Jetpack
Yeah, but those bottle rockets are a couple of grams, a pound at the most, completely full. There's pressure, yeah, but not enough to do this.

Re: Water Bottle Jetpack
It was funny listening to them talk in Japanese. The background song from "Independence Day" was a neat addition to what they were doing.

Re: Water Bottle Jetpack
Funniest/coolest thing ever. I'm surprised how far he flew. Daaaaamn!

You actually think this is real?
I CALL SHENANIGANS!
Obviously this is fake...judging by the way he seems to be dangling on a line, and the fact that at that range, the bottles would just flip him over....no way to get THAT kind of pressure from liquid compressed into soda bottles. The bottles themselves would fail first, that or the seals. Plus the long shot that they show where he spins on his own axis....COME ON.
They obviously did this in more than one take, then edited this together for entertainment value.

Re: You actually think this is real?
ok.... i get you.... but then, where the hell are the cords/cables?
to the right, water, to the left, water, above, air!
and don't come with no shit of "ummmm.... a helicopter"
plus, its not that hard, it can actually be done.... i lifted 40 pounds with 25 bottles and air-pressure, so why not lift 140 pounds with 200 bottles?
Man, i love science....
screw God.... he can't make Japanese people go flying around.... with water bottles

Re: You actually think this is real?
A little thing called "Video Retouching". It's surprisingly inexpensive and easy to re-touch a video and edit out thing like chords and cables. You can do it with a half-decent video editor and a home computer or even with some Adobe products.

Re: You actually think this is real?
I agree. The flight dynamics and acceleration look all wrong.
Take a look at the video full-screen as he's coming twards you. You can actually see his trajectory "kink" well as his axis of rotation pretty much telltale of him being suspended and tossed from a crane overhead.

When he's spining it looks almost like when ppl skydive nad get spining. Funny even if hoax

Re: Water Bottle Jetpack
Genius! Other than the jetpack prototype made out of hyper-pressurized water bottles launching an untrained John Doe 300 feet into an open lake with no fixed flotation device, medical team, or hypothesis necessary to determine the level of danger they were putting themselves in! A sucess on multiple levels!
