At first I thought the real-life inspiration for this was the incident of an Air Transat plane that lost all its fuel on a trans Atlantic flight, glided down with to the Azores and all passengers survived. Here's the story, it is interesting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Transat_Flight_236
