MISS REPRESENTATION explores the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America, and challenges the media's limited portrayal of what it means to be a powerful woman. This screening will be followed by an interactive Skype Q+A broadcast from the City Library in Salt Lake City with the director Jennifer Seibel Newsom.

Much appreciated. You are one of the hardest working moderators here. And I'm including some pretty good company going back some ten years.
It's a shame that Jaxon is such a cheapskate and won't raise your pay. Heh-heh.

Say, KC, when did you start here on M&C? I can remember your sudden appearance (the smell of fish is one I cannot easily ignore, nor forget), but what date was that?
Since, you have voted a total 10,727 times. Perhaps I've been here a year longer, but my count is a paltry 13,869.
I take it you are one of the few people who actually vote on nearly each link they open. And then to think the stuff I watch on M&C is the tip of the proverbial iceberg... No doubt the same with you.
Anyway, I don't often add mirrors or tags (like you probably do), but am known to flag dupes regularly and generally troll around seeking mayhem (and pussy). Ah, well, it takes all sorts.
Thanks for all the good work, dude. I ain't got no money, but hugs are free.

Sorry, ladies, that's a side effect of evolution. Women who are serious about politics or business or war are much less likely to reproduce and pass on those desires. Women who stay home, watch cake shows and celebrity gossip are much more likely to reproduce and make more of the same.
Men don't have this problem. So don't blame men, just "know your limits".

Re: Miss Representation: Official Trailer
True - it's amazing we've survived this long. ;) The good news is that understanding our memetic as well as genetic make-up gives us more control over our evolutionary future (for better or for worse). I think the tough part will be using the crowbar in such a way that it doesn't kill the patients, and here I mean both men and women. Adaptation is tough, even when environmental variable changes are purposely inflicted.
Guys and girls here who read this, think about this, and incorporate "smart is sexy" values into their lives are my "kids," even if I don't have any biological ones (and I don't).

Re: Miss Representation: Official Trailer
You have made the most unmistakably sexist comment, which cements your position in the Troll Hall of Fame.
Womem with careers produce less children? Please cite a source. The vast majority of American women with young children are working outside of the home (http://www.hoover.org/publications/hoover-digest/article/6798). And the more women work, the more babies they have (http://www.worldcrunch.com/more-women-work-more-babies-they-have-new-french-study-says/3816).
Where is your proof? Know your own foolish limits.

Re: Miss Representation: Official Trailer
Well dang, then they must honestly not be as interested in positions of power and influence as men. And here I was giving them the benefit of the doubt when in reality the majority of women just don't aspire to much. Thanks, spam.
By: NoBiggie
Re: Miss Representation: Official Trailer
He didn't say "women with careers," Spam. There's plenty of evidence to correlate birth rates (negatively) with education level of women. Here's one:
http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/97facts/edu2birt.htm
The study you cite is interesting, but it ignores large parts of the world and actually still supports Biggs' statement because a 1.69/1.71 kids per woman birth rate, held constant, will eventually lead to a population of zero.
We have to be careful about calling people sexist or racist when talking about social phenomena. Those terms tend to shut down much needed dialog about real issues. There are a lot of uncomfortable topics that get ignored out of political correctness, I think.
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fertility_and_intelligence :
"In 1982, Daniel Vining sought to address these issues in a large study on the fertility of over 10,000 individuals throughout the United States, who were then aged 25 to 34. The average fertility in his study was correlated at -0.86 with IQ for white women and -0.96 for black women. Vining argued that this indicated a drop in the genotypic average IQ of 1.6 points per generation for the white population, and 2.4 points per generation for the black population. In considering these results along with those from earlier researchers, Vining wrote that 'in periods of rising birth rates, persons with higher intelligence tend to have fertility equal to, if not exceeding, that of the population as a whole,' but, 'The recent decline in fertility thus seems to have restored the dysgenic trend observed for a comparable period of falling fertility between 1850 and 1940.' To address the concern that the fertility of this sample could not be considered complete, Vining carried out a follow-up study for the same sample 18 years later, reporting the same, though slightly decreased, negative correlation between IQ and fertility.
...
Regardless of the methodology employed, later research has generally supported that of Vining."

Re: Miss Representation: Official Trailer
While I am in agreement that I had mistakenly considered "Women who are serious about politics or business" to be career women, "Just know your limits" was extremely sexist and I stand by my observations.
BTW, a couple of your supplied links (which NoBiggie is conspicuously lacking a single one) I had stumbled across and at least scanned.
Studies aside, the stereotyping of housewives as watching cake shows and pumping out kids as compared to intelligent women who do not bear children was equally offensive language by NoBiggie.
I have no issue with another expressing their opinions but when asked for substantiation no documentation was supplied. Four additional comments by NoBiggie without validation. Thusly, I will express my opinion. NoBiggie is a sexist and gutless member who has made several comments that are purely based in fantasy.

Well, maybe he is and maybe he's just trying to get under people's skin or be funny, but he's much better at spurring dialog than I am, so I welcome him and his insensitive comments. Since I've come to expect it from him, I've actually starting finding him rather likable. He plays his cranky old man character well. We all should be so lucky to find our place.
Combat is good. It makes us think. I like that about you, too. You're grump...I mean, outspoken in your own way, so I know what's on your mind. That gives me much to ponder and contributes much to my character. Thanks for that, dude. :)

Re: Miss Representation: Official Trailer
I can appreciate liking someone for speaking their mind. I often go that route. I rarely do however, visit that path with someone who embraces illogic and doubles down with hateful thoughts.
And for the record, I've got a couple of years to go until I'm considered a cantankerous old man. Otherwise, it's accurate.

This conversation has ended. You are a waste of my time.

Re: Miss Representation: Official Trailer
Ok, let have a girl talk. Female writers: I find most stories written by women, well boring, all about relationships, love, talking, and then he said.. and I said… they bore me horrendously. My favorite shows: Spartacus, Deadwood; action, adventure, no sappy crappy feelings. I don’t want to be in touch with my feelings, much less give a crap about a fictional character and I don’t want to talk about it and care very little if anybody else does. I know there must be more women like me.
Now that is settled, next subject. Female lust for power, why else to get into politics or climb over others on corporate latter. The opportunity has always been there, now it is just more available for women to reach for that brass ring, minus the gore and havoc that would ensue. There is premium placed on women’s physical attractiveness, does the media skew public perceptions of powerful women by jabs related to appearance? I think it is a reflection of current social trends. Change takes time and the only way one can prove if they are right for the job is by being the best at it, all naysayers be dammed.
Provocative images of women in media. You guys (men) are bombarded with how you are supposed to look too. Same commercials that feature Photoshopped female models also feature Photoshopped male models. As young men did you feel like that male model standard had to be achieved or you would never get a date?

Re: Miss Representation: Official Trailer
Women who stay at home and have one kid after another are in very short supply, frankly I do not know of any. If anything women are the breadwinners because their husbands have been laid off and or choose to raise the children.
"Women who are serious about politics or business" – what do you mean by it, or are you just going to sit back and giggle with glee some more?

I'm pretty sure he was saying "Better to be a clown who is intentionally foolish, than someone trying to be clever but failing at the attempt".
For example, better to be a troll than quoting Shakespeare incorrectly to insult a troll but accidentally insulting yourself instead.
I thought your first post was great, not sure why you'd want to start digging a hole now.

Re: Miss Representation: Official Trailer
I like the attitude, Vanitas, and I don't disagree with what you said, but the heart of the issue here is setting early expectations. I think girls and women are sold short of their aptitudes early on partially as a result of media standards, partly as a result of parental expectations, partly from the lack of role models, partly from peer pressure to think, act, talk, and, yes, write a certain way, among other factors.
I don't hold anything against women who use their sexuality as an advantage for personal gain from men stupid enough to let them. More power to them. If you've got it, flaunt it if you want to, I say.
What strikes me, though, is the venom with which not only men, but other women, tear down women who are achieving, or attempting to achieve, success. From my experience, women can actually be meaner in that regard, and it baffles me every time I see it. The effect is a class of women who have become "the best at what they do," and I use that in quotes for a purpose. Female corporate leaders (academic, too, now that I think about it), I've known and worked with have had to reach a new level of shrewdness, callousness, and political savvy that borders on psychopathy in order to compete with their male counterparts (psychopath male counterparts, should I say). Those aren't very good role models, in my opinion. Plus, it feeds and extends the life of the crazy, megalomaniacal corporate "brain," which cares only about making short-term numbers.
I think the intelligent woman's sentiment today is generally "to hell with that. I'm going into a field where women are currently respected and being the best I can be there." That's certainly the path of least resistance, but one that won't result in positive change. There will be those that need to endure the claws of jealousy and disdain. There will also need to be those of us that do our best to protect and support them in their rise, but we're still early in the fight. Very early. And sometimes, I look at television and pop culture and I wonder if we aren't losing.
To answer your last question, yes, I felt pressured to exercise to look good, but the pursuit was the date with the "ideal beautiful" woman. The 10. The supermodel. Shallow and stupid. (No, never got that date, btw.). Fortunately, I grew up and realized that a curious, intelligent woman is far preferable to the arm trophy. Having a best friend, life partner, and intellectual equal is far preferable to, and less stressful than, having someone who requires success to maintain a high standard of living (aka, someone attracted to my future cash flows). I get tired of veneers.
I value the explorers, the discoverers, the tinkerers, the thoughtful problem solvers. We need all we can get - male and female.
