Kids Selling Lemonade Defy Police in Washington and Get Arrested
In response to a recent wave of lemonade stand shutdowns and harassment of children over such petty regulations as are used to shut them down, several activist gathered at the west lawn of the capitol in Washington, DC to sell lemonade and were arrested. While the officers were technically on solid "legal" ground in shutting down the stand, they behaved inappropriately by any standard numerous times, using intimidation tactics on protestors and observers, and harassing members of the professional media. The willingness with which children and tourists participated by purchasing lemonade in disobedience of the police instructions is an indicator of how little respect the general public has for government in general, and specifically police when enforcing unjust laws. Gives me hope for America. For those who are complaining about the public property not being used for its intended purpose, part of the point of this that the government should not be using public property for the glorification of government when it could be better used to serve public interests. Excessive vending at the capitol (or without a permit in any public space) would surely be preferable to 22.5% unemployment. Free the economy!

How else can we know what's safe to eat or drink if the government doesn't tell us so?? Human life is at stake here people, use a permit.

Kind of takes all the fun out of my non-certified, unlabeled psychedelic lemonade stand idea.

They know they need a permit right ? Then get a permit. Really they've set out to piss off the cops. I don't think they really needed that many officers for that little lemonade stand. And i don't see how they were intimidating. Just that one cop lady who didn't want the camera in her face, the rest were on the mobiles and generally just standing about asking people not to buy it. One cop did say it's ok to give it away for free but not sell it. He at least gave them that option. I guess he was hoping for a freebee looked hot out.

I think the intimidation factor may have come from the numbers of police involved as you poitn out. I don't know how many need to be on-hand to make group arrests, but I would imagine that people get antsy with a lot of cops around. The female officer should not have touched the camera, I think.

Also, I think the whole point of this was to get arrested; I'm certain they knew that a permit was needed, what they wanted us to see was that someone in the US could actually be arrested for selling lemonade. They were told this, but kept selling anyway. If the police wanted to thwart their message, then they would have just issued citations; by making the arrests, the protestors' points were made concerning authoritarian government infiltrating our lives even to the ridiculous little things like lemonade stands.

Just hope their protest was backed by fiscal supporters willing to bail them out. Otherwise, I feel for their parents.

Jesus on a Wheat Thin. Write up a summons and cite the fine. Arrest? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot!

And of course, giving away the lemonade is fine and perfectly legal. Like the 10 cents per cup even covers the plastic cup?

Before this link gets crushed, my opinion:

I think some of the cops went way too far. Especially the female cop raised my hackles. That's no way to conduct yourself as a cop.

I get the deal about a permit to put up a stand there. I myself would be very hesitant to drink lemonade from a stand just standing somewhere, but in this case I have no problem with it, but maybe I'm naive. I just look people in the eyes and take my chances. For me, life isn't about permits, but about people. If I can't see the people involved, I definitely want some labels and permits and whatnot.

If no permits are needed there, the whole field would be crowded with stands and people, but it would be fun. Right? Why can't that be? Why not build a nice square and benches and a fountain and have people do business without cops slapping folks around for no good reason other than an unreasonable display of power? Jeez.

I guess many or most Americans love their stupid lawns. Makes them get used to their stupid prison cell soon enough, as the laws will keep coming and they getting to be pretty darn stupid. Soon, everybody will be breaking the law without even knowing it. It's like a religion.

Instead of engaging in a dialogue, there's a brute display of force, i.e. the only language the US government knows and it's a pity, because the government should be by and for the people and not against them.

I don't know, this action of the lemonade-stand folks wasn't that clearly thought out, but it illustrates the system. The inhumanity of it. That's dangerous.

It doesn't matter what side you are on. The issue here was the deserved to be arrested. If they had an issue with the law, they shouldn't antagonize and waste the time of police officers, which is all they were trying to do. They don't make the laws, and they can't change them. This was just a group of stupid punks looking for their own cause and identity because they probably have little else to offer. If they wanted to make a point, they could have done it without starting shit with the cops. They couldn't have figured they wouldn't have been arrested, especially when they knew they were breaking the law. One person went as far to say, "This is how your tax dollars are spent" (paraphrased), but in reality, those shitheads were stealing the polices time, IE: their tax dollars. The entire video was stupid, with a stupid point, and a stupid agenda. It's just immature and naive, and accomplished nothing but a mommy and daddy going to the station to bail them out.

In cases such as this, police are oftentimes given leeway in deciding whether to enforce the law. Those stupid cops could just as easily have ignored the whole thing. Instead, they inflamed the situation and copped (hehe) a fascist attitude about it. They are much more to blame for the waste of taxpayer money than the kids.

Laws exist, but they don't always exist for a good reason.

The fact of the matter is ; it doesn't matter how big or small your stand is, vending is vending and a permit is needed. It will only escalate with someone saying "oh but my stand is only a tiny bit bigger than theirs is" and they get let off. Then another comes along saying theirs is a tiny bit bigger and this continues until your park is a wal-mart.

Stop your park becoming a wal-mart, get a permit !
