Re: Sam Harris: Muslims No Clue; Civil Society
This string of statements, which is posted over, and over, and over on this site might seem convincing, but the great thing about them is that each denies some complexity, while rightfully illuminating aspects that need to be addressed.
Just think about the first statement: "Christians often complain that atheists balance each discussion about 'Islam' with a discussion of extremist Christianity (jihadists <-> abortion doctors). I think our Christian neighbours (even the craziest!) are right to be outrageed about this pretense of even-handedness. Islam is atm scarier and more culpable for needless human misery."
This is very short, but it relies on a ton of assumptions. If religion is really what people believe and practice (as it relates to the supernatural), then are not our truly liberal Muslim neighbors right to be outraged when they are accused of being part of something more dangerous and harmful than even abortion clinic terrorists? Of course they are! The only condition is that they need to acknowledge that Islam is not a single, monolithic set of beliefs and practices.
There are no moderate religious people. They all falsely claim to know fundamental truths that no-one can possibly know. Their holding of these beliefs, combined with the customs that accompany them affect society, BUT this is not a simple process in many cases. Christians aren't compassionate peaceniks. Muslims aren't selfless charity machines. In any case, this is why religion is radical, and the more (fundamental) certainty they claim to possess, the more radical they are.
But there's a different side. There are choices. Both the very radical and the less radical have the fundamental freedom to define how they ought to think and act. It's because humans aren't rational. To a believer this ability to double-think is a gift. Just because scholars claim to possess the holy collective Islamic/Catholic/Jewish/... knowledge of generations doesn't mean that anyone should, or that most do completely accept these narrow (nuanced) rulings in all their specificity.
Islam, like all Abrahamic faiths, is not a single beast with lesser and greater parts. People who believe in the Islamic faith are EXACTLY the same as "our Christians neighbors" in their ability to hold personal religious views. Six percent of Turks believe in the death penalty for Muslim apostates. More than 75 percent of Egyptians believe in the death penalty for muslim apostates. Are Turks simply less religious/radical? Do they not possess the ability to read the Hadith or Koran? No, Turks live in a different political climate. They have their own history. Their own brand of secular nationalism. Turks are a different kind of Muslims. In turn, every Turk has his/her own take on Islam.
People like Harris believe that it is distasteful and downright stupid to look at some obvious truths concerning socio-economic reality, political repression and the polarizing effects of our taking sides in religious conflicts (Israel). He loves to present Muslims as relatively(!) mindless drones. Instead, let's give all credence to the viability of Muslim religious leaders' plans for peaceful conquest of the West. Let's pretend that they can achieve their stated goals by the, be it violent or non-violent, means they have chosen. Let's all forget the inconvenient truths, they say. Only then can we view and contemplate reality in a rational fashion.

""Six percent of Turks believe in the death penalty for Muslim apostates. More than 75 percent of Egyptians believe in the death penalty for muslim apostates. Are Turks simply less religious/radical?""
94% of Turkish Muslims either disagree with, are ignorant of, or are opposed to Islam as Mohammad taught it, as the "righteous generation" (that of Omar, Abu Bakr, Uthaman) practiced it, as all four scholarly institutions of mainstream Sunni jurisprudence (mudhabs) teach it, and as the majority of today's Muftis of major Islamic cities preach it. Only 25% of Egyptian Muslims say the same.
Consider Roman Catholics of Massachusetts, the most densley populated catholic state (about 75% of the population identify themselves as catholic) in the United States. We have one of the highest divorce rates in the country, about 70% of Massachusetts voters identified themselves as pro-choice in 2004, and most people have obviously had sex before marraige and have used prophilactics.
According to your logic, Catholicism teaches premarital permiscuous sex, the moral righteousness of abortion and promotes divorce.
Why can we not define religion by what the scriptures say? or what the Prohet taught? Why must we take a vote to define truth democratically?
As an agnostic, am I a bigot for claiming christianity teaches that a man named Jesus rose from the dead? Am I a bigot for claiming that Mohammad taught his followers to wage war against non believers until they were "utterly subdued?"

ADDENDUM: My first paragraph is in reference to the Islamic view of apostasy.

Re: Sam Harris: Muslims No Clue; Civil Society
Obviously the closer one gets to the core supposedly historical 'truths' of religions, the more confidently one can claim that all, or at least virtually all believers of a religion accept these truths.
What's not accurate is reducing the phenomenon of Islam to whatever suits a fear mongering agenda at any one time. What regressive scholars preach matters greatly. If 'conservative' voices are currently winning the battle for the minds of many Muslim populations, then that matters. My main point is that there are different sorts of zealots, and the ideas of borderline fascistic zealots are by no means all that Islam entails. The beliefs of ordinary Muslims in different environments matter. It matters that secular beliefs are in principle no weaker (as far as I can tell) than reactionary Islamist beliefs. It matters that orthodox religion feasts on human misery; it thrives in inhumane conditions; it thrives on existential uncertainty; it thrives when it has a monopoly on education. There's hope beyond the undeniable truth of the exceptional cruelty of Taliban baby killers. The world is getting smaller. The tyrants won't always be there to shield people from their dignity. It's scary for 'us', but judging by 'their' reaction, it's even scarier for 'them'. 'We' (not I) fear 'their' violence. 'They' fear the truth (as well as 'our' proven capacity for terror on a massive scale). Maybe 'we' won't win, but if it's not 'us', then it's the Chinese or some alien invaders. Orthodox Muslims spend way too much time staring at the floor. Not a winning strategy, methinks.

This all sounds very familiar. You sure this hasn't been posted yet?
Never mind. If someone squeaks, we know it was a dupe.

I squeaked, in a sense. But there's no way I'm going to make the effort to track that shit down. It's always a pain to listen to that degenertate, shell-shocked snake. Spam should have done it. He's the fan-boy after all.

Re: Sam Harris: Muslims No Clue; Civil Society
Sorry, Wadadde; the only one who strikes me as a snake here in this comment section is you. Sam Harris a shell-shocked, degenerate snake? And Spam a fanboy?
Pssssssssssst! (That's a pun) I am venemous, too. You and I put some feeling in our words, don't we? Yessssssss, we do.
Out with the poison.
Rub it, mate.
And don't squeak too much, or I'm opening the lemming season early this year.

Re: Sam Harris: Muslims No Clue; Civil Society
A fan-boy is a term used for someone who is a fan of something or someone. So, hiss off.
Why can't we both be snakes, by the way? I'm the good snake, though.. the blue one. Harris gets angry pink. You get to be the skin I shed.

I decline. You be the serpent and feel free to choose whatever color you like. By the way, how's the cloaca? Must feel good to finger yourself there -- if you had any fingers.
