Richard Dawkins: We Are Going to Die, Lucky Us

Richard Dawkins reads from his book 'Unweaving the Rainbow'
"We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Sahara. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here."

Perhaps there's a version of this tale that's wildly appealing, but overall I have to say this aroused a giant "meh".
I don't need one of the driest men on the face of this earth to tell me that I'm "blessed" because I could just as well have not sprung into existence (as 'myself'). I am the universe. I was bound to be "blessed". I don't give a fuck about the permutations . I could care less about the fate of my dna. We live in a sort of void, a disinterested framework. We 'feel' and 'think' stuff. Trapped in this tunnel of sensations, we imagine that what we imagine is precious. Sure, it's more 'precious' than nothing, but only because nothing doesn't exist. Blah blah blah.
There are greater secular poets than Dawkins. There's a dying palm tree in my bedroom who's superior in the story telling department. Dawkins should stick to what he's good at : being a truth-telling, merciless dick to religious people. This is the universe's opinion. Obey.

I think there's a longer version of this video that ends with;
"....except wadadde, who is essentially dead inside."
;)

Re: Richard Dawkins: We Are Going to Die, Lucky Us
I got him pegged for a happy, well fed (not to be mistaken for obtuse) jolly fellow, who volunteers to be Santa at x-mass, paints rainbows and happy faces with colored markers and of course, does blood drives. All without even being asked, just out of kindness of his heart.
Dawkins: we should rejoice in multitude of universes choices, renew in nature coming back to life, where did that egg go?

As far as insults go, this one isn't so bad. The guy's got style, ya know. He's a free 'thinker'. Makes everyone around him seem like huge squares. Yup, high praise indeed.
