Want one of your own?http://www.grand-illusions.com/images/dragon.JPGIt's 200 dpi so use Photoshop or a similar program to print it out. Don't try to print it out from your browser. Instructions included.

Re: Optical Illusion Dragon
Once you know how it works, it is a bit hard to focus on the illusion.

Re: Optical Illusion Dragon
You're right about that... It looks so much better on camera because it was filmed with only one lens, but it's rather hard to replicate with two eyes.
And on a different note, there's an illusion much like this one at the Smithsonian. It appears to be a dollhouse (it true hollow head form) but is shaped in such a way that your brain tries to focus on the inside and outside at once. It really hurt my head the first time I saw it. =)

Re: Optical Illusion Dragon
If you make one of these dragons, here a tip to see the illusion easier. Place the dragon a little above eye level and stare into it's eyes. Close one of your eyes. Blink you open eye a few times(while still staring at the dragon's eyes) so that you eye must refocus. After a couple of tries, you should be able to see the illusion. You'll know when you've got it.

Re: Optical Illusion Dragon
It actually says on the cutout image you can print out.
"View from 2'... Close one eye. Look into the eyes of the creature and rock back and forth. Wow!"
Yuo're not supposed to use two eyes.

Re: Optical Illusion Dragon
it works best if you're about 3-4 feet away from it so yuor eyes dont pick up any flaws in the folding or cutting when you put it together. Also, keep the face in even light, either light going into the face cave, or coming from behind it. shadows within the face throw the illusion off.

Re: Optical Illusion Dragon
Awesome find!!!
Also check out the hollow face video on their main page which functions on the same principle. They plan on doing on with Einstein's face in 05. Really cool site.
I am surprised advertisers and marketers have not taken advantage of this atleast to my knowledge. Imagine billboards using this illusion technique.
Creepy stuff and so very very cool :)

Re: Optical Illusion Dragon
i gotta say, i showed this to my mom and she freaked out. i'm keeping it on the cabinate next to our TV so when she gets up to go to the kitchen the head follows her.
i wanna see someone do this on a larger scale. that'd be awsome.

Re: Optical Illusion Dragon
It'd be harder to make a giant one bcuz you'd have to move alot more to get an effect of the head "following" you..

Re: Optical Illusion Dragon
what would be cool is if you could put a big one outside of a museum in a courtyard or something, with a window looking into the courtyard, so when people walk past the long window the thing outside follows them from a distance. It'd make people stay far away enough for it to work. Though i admit you wouldn't really notice it follows you unless you walk past the long window a few times.
What'd be great is if the window was made so that the window would end and the dragon would go out of sight just before you move too far to either side to ruin the illusion.

Re: Optical Illusion Dragon
What about from inside a car? Imagine a billboard with one. With the right lighting in a controlled environment it could work very well.
