Apparently the moral of the tale is that we are all supposed to be passive, ineffectual, and smugly self-righteous like St. Augustine when confronted with movements intent on destruction of our way of life (Sandinistas, Jihadists, etc.). It poses no meaningful answer to how to confront war, whether it comes from conquesting marxism or conquesting jihadists.

It wasw merely an analyzation on what is happening and didn't glorify St. Augustine as your post suggests. Rather, they just used his observations to tell their tale.
