The Internet: Where religions come to die

-Kinda speaks for itself.

Clips taken from

Godzilla of course :-)

'the end of the world cult'

Fascinating documentary about some guy who claimed to be jesus (one of many) and predicted the end of the world a couple of times. The interesting conclusion (other than the world not ending of course) was that he was arrested for his sexual abuse of minors. Seeing the 'son of god' go from righteous 'they are persecuting me like they did with jesus' to a man institutionalized in prison, on hunger strike is a fascinating insight into the human mind and the messiah complex.

I would also recommend reading the wiki article on him.... it's captivating stuff!

Jesus camp of course (I'll leave you to find that!)

and Mr Deity (who does some wonderfully funny satire on Christianity).

Turns out he's an ex mormon (damn the typo is so tempting), and has a v. interesting story to tell.

Clip also taken from the simpsons satire of cults 'The Joy of Sect'.

Clip of Bill Maher also taken from Religious.

... or as a contributor here once eloquently put it, "The Internet is the church of atheists."

Here's some old-timey religious porn desecrating the Church of Atheism.

Re: The Internet: Where Religions Come to Die
"I saw in his hand a long spear of gold, and at the iron's point there seemed to be a little fire. He appeared to me to be thrusting it at times into my heart, and to pierce my very entrails; when he drew it out, he seemed to draw them out also, and to leave me all on fire with a great love of God. The pain was so great, that it made me moan; and yet so surpassing was the sweetness of this excessive pain, that I could not wish to be rid of it"

--St. Theresa of Avila, autobiography

Summary: God pushed his "golden spear" into Theresa.

Then she came.

And apparently God is a really rough fucker too.

She mounts a full-size crucifix. "It's okay, we're married."

Well, good thing we can all depend on picking science apart. Have no fear, scientists do not get booted out, ridiculed and shunned by the rest. Nahh.

Re: The Internet: Where Religions Come to Die
Had to look up Garva -what? any closer to definition?

Oh, when i am not busy baptizing unsuspecting atheists via sprinklers, air conditioner drops or fluids coming from dark balcony corners, i enjoy figuring out five humors of the body and designing a better saddle for dinosaurs. The lemming mentality is not unique to the big daddy in the sky believers.

Re: The Internet: Where Religions Come to Die
It was coined by a Jesus freak from Denver. I think it's a fancy word for "spoken".

http://www.milkandcookies.com/user/JesusIsLORD/comments/

I like the word, but I've only ever seen it in the phrase "Garvasticated by the Devil" I'm going to make a point of garvasticating this word several times this week.

Re: The Internet: Where Religions Come to Die
I'm glad loqi caught my bizarre (ir)reference.

My point is this: lemming mentality may be rampant with human beings, but the scientific community is in no way parallel to the religious community. They serve very different purposes--at least, to the scientific community. It is the religious communities that make the assumption that they fill some sort of void that we have in us, some sort of place left by church or god.

Being outcast from the National Academy of Sciences because you fabricated research has no parallel to being excommunicated because you questioned religious doctrine, or, as one senator in Massachusetts has found, being denied communion for being pro-choice. These are apples and fish, not apples and oranges.

Re: The Internet: Where Religions Come to Die
Religious freak. There is neither logic, reason or enough proof to turn a fanatic, especially a fresh convert. I think the answer is time and experience of different way of thinking, which would come with enough time. Yeah, i am repeating myself.

Scrutiny of science. Where is a history buff when you need them? List of ridiculous ideas and ridiculed scientists http://amasci.com/weird/vindac.html , Weird science versus revolutionary science, 2002 William Beaty. List of folks whose ideas were good, but because they did not subscribe to accepted science trend or did not kiss enough rings, were rejected. So which one is worst, not getting communion at a mass or getting your research funding cut off? Here is a link to another article http://amasci.com/weird/globe.txt, from Boston globe? Your neck of the woods? It addresses what happens to new ideas within accepted science circles.

My ending argument: i am not going to put forth an argument against questioning of beliefs or religions, being respectful etc. a good amount of questioning is always needed. Neither am i going to ask you to be less severe, again, the cobwebs in corners need to be swept away. But, do put other "protected" ideas such as scrutiny of science into perspective. There is a lot of holly cows that need trashing.
