Actually, right about the same time. The Piper at the Gates of Dawn came out in Aug 1967. In mid 1967 Syd started going catatonic on stage and playing music not related to their material, or not playing at all. All downhill from there.

Yeah! I know....althoughI feel guilty... I happen to like the direction they took after Barrett left ( much more evocative and instrumental prog rock)...

Same here. When you think about it though, Syd was only there for Piper... and wrote a little for Saucerful of Secrets. He was kicked out early in 1968 before the second album was even out.

Apparently he turned up at EMI studios during the recording of "Wish you were here"....which! when considering the concept of the album, was very spooky indeed...
