I have to say one thing. After being brought up in that environment, and going through a serious self -valuation phase I can honestly say that i derived a significant amount of good things from the biblical teachings because i payed attention and tried to figure out what Jesus was getting at:

Don't they all agree that God exists and that there's only one true god? But, yeah, they can't make up their minds as to what that god is, so in the end they're all doing God knows what.

He was a smart man. The fact that 99.9% of Christians ignore nearly everything he said is all the evidence anyone should need to dismiss the idea that religion even remotely represents any kind of "truth" at all. It's then a short step to concluding that there's not likely to be a god behind any of it.

In addition to believing in a God, I also believe in a devil. What better way to prevent people from finding God then to create mass confusion. Factor in hypocrisy and no wonder atheism is on the rise.
