On November 20, 2009, at a Borders bookstore in Columbus, Ohio, Sarah Palin held a book signing event in support of "Going Rogue". Palin's supporters wanted her to run for the presidency, but they weren't exactly sure what she'd do as president. Short on specifics, most of them were uncertain what her policy positions are. They just felt that they liked her. She's "real". And that the solution to all of our country's problems--health care, energy, the deficit, unemployment, and the economy--was to cut taxes and lower spending, and Palin, they said, would solve them by doing just that.

I would love Mrs Palin to run for the presidency and use the guy at 0:37 as her spokesperson.

Re: Sarah Palin Book Signing: Interviews with Supporters
Nice 5*. But I am sure that many outtakes had some fairly intelligent responses.
I'm not suggesting that there is any quality to Palin that I admire other than her being an efficient exchanger of oxygen for carbon dioxide, but as amusing as this political piece is, it wouldn't take a Steven Spielberg to create a clip of Obama supporters who are lacking knowledge of the issues.

As I'm sure we alll know how editing works - see any Jay Leno street interview.

Re: Sarah Palin Book Signing: Interviews with Supporters
While I would tend to agree that editing out answers that the producers don't find suitable to their cause is a big part of any on-street interview, you have to also consider the possibility that it could be an accurate representation of the majority of answers given.
If five or more people gave the same response regarding her foreign policies, "I don't know" for example, it would make more sense to condense it down to the one person who gave the answer in the most interesting (or dumbest, I suppose) manner.
I guess I'm saying that there are far more sinister examples of "controversial issue" street interview editing out there. (ie: Ray Comfort?)

Re: Sarah Palin Book Signing: Interviews with Supporters
Certainly something to consider and thanks for your comment. But I think the greater issue on my mind is the general erosion of journalistic integrity.
Having worked in the PR industry at a high level (junior VP) for a few years, I saw how a well-written press release became as good as gold in many instances. Now I'm not trying to diminish the importance of the field but I do want to make it known that the casual observers need to exercise care.
Wow. armchair philosophy in action here. Please forgive me for taking such a somber tone.

Re: Sarah Palin Book Signing: Interviews with Supporters
You're right of course. (I know something, too, about how much of the "news" is pretty much straight regurgitating of press releases).
But I also think this was a fairly straight piece, as far as that goes. He allowed people to speak at length, and although he might well have cherry-picked his main subjects, nonetheless, they do seem to me to be both an accurate depiction of Palin supporters, and an accurate depiction of much of middle America. I doubt the people who were interviewed would have a problem with it, except that it was made by something called "New Left Media." It wasn't a Michael Moore hatchet job.
It was depressing too. I am often depressed that I really don't seem to like many of my own countrymen. Just the urban dwellers, really. I didn't used to feel that way. But maybe I was just naive back then.

Re: Sarah Palin Book Signing: Interviews with Supporters
So that's pretty much why she was nominated as VP in the first place. They were reaching for that demographic that would only look at her smile, her 1950's work-at-home-mom hairstyle, and her gee-golly-gosh way of speaking (not the words mind you, just the tone).

Re: Sarah Palin Book Signing: Interviews with Supporters
Cheap shot. Editing issues aside, this same video could just as easily be made about anybodies supporters. During the presidential campaign I was hearing pretty much the same type of garble coming out of both sides supporters. People in general aren't informed. I think people are too busy to educate themselves about all of these issues. As school has gotten more hectic for me I don't have time to read the books and news that I used to, and I used to be pretty proud of my current affairs literacy. Now I don't know jack lol

Re: Sarah Palin Book Signing: Interviews with Supporters
is it really a cheap shot?
does Palin 'stand' for anything?
she's all image as far as i can tell.
even if her supporters were better informed, the answers wouldn't be radically different

Re: Sarah Palin Book Signing: Interviews with Supporters
I think this is pretty much everything that Sarah Palin represents at her base. It's an image, a hollow ideal that they support: Joe Sixpack-Soccer Mom-Regular Person with common sense for freedom.
She represents them. People love her because they see her as themselves, and her triumph as their own triumph. When people attack her, they see it as a personal attack. So they support her blindly because they see her as "One of Them." Don't attack my homegirl!
If you can stand Gil Smart screaming, "Outrage!" this clip says it pretty well.
http://mcooki.es/168581
You can find supporters of every politician that are like this, it's true. Fox News lives for the Democratic ones, but they're pretty thin on the ground.
But it's really hard to find Palin supporters that aren't like this on tape. If you have clips, point me to them.
It's just that she hasn't done anything or said anything that makes her stand out. The only cause she has is her identity. Prove me wrong, please. I'm listening.

Re: Sarah Palin Book Signing: Interviews with Supporters
For starters I don't like Sarah Palin one iota and agree for the most part with you. I just don't think that showing the ignorance of her supporters is a good way to make their point since that street goes both ways. So yes, definitely a cheap shot

Re: Sarah Palin Book Signing: Interviews with Supporters
My nested comment earlier was supposed to be in response to your first comment, Rou. I'm agreeing with waddade.
The reason I think this is fair isn't because these things don't "go both ways"--it's because I can't find clips that don't show Palin supporters that aren't identifying with anything other than her person. With every other politician, I can find a wider breadth of positions.
Despite the fact that Palin supporters claim to hate celebrities and Hollywood elites, the only reasons they seem to love her is because she is a celebrity.
Palin: A celebrity of average proportions. Someone capable of completing routine, simple tasks in a given time period. Someone who can make change for a twenty. Who doesn't have to do long division without a calculator. But who does have "horse sense." Someone who knows which is heavier--a cup of milk or a cup of cream, or how many teaspoons are in a tablespoon. They want this person, not the superman, to become the next president.
I know editing can be used to lie, but I can't find a reasonable group of Palin supporters on tape, and I don't doubt you can make that tape, too, considering how many of them there are. There's a large enough sample size, and people are motivated to do it. I just haven't seen it.
Find me a tape that isn't a "cheap shot." Really, I'll watch that and I'll admit I'm wrong. I've seen the equivalents of this tape of Obama supporters on Fox. But that's a bigger tent. The Palin supporters, I can't find evidence that this isn't their mean right here.

Re: Sarah Palin Book Signing: Interviews with Supporters
I wasn't replying to your post but the other guy (whatever his name is). And I agree with everything you say, but would like to point out the tape you saw on fox as evidence of my point... which I'm not really sure what that is... lol. I suppose it's merely to say that as far as getting a laugh this is a good tape. But for insight I don't think there is any to be found here. Both sides use this same tactic to show the stupidity of the other. These are just average people who like the lady and are in line for her book. Average people that I talked with on the liberal side of the aisle I was dismayed with their lack of knowledge about any of the issues that candidates stood for, and I'm talking back to the primaries. It was ALL character based.
The only average people on either side that seemed to have any understanding of the issues were the Ron Paul supporters or the Dennis Kucinich supporters. To say that the tapes of democrats like this are "thin on the ground" has nothing to do with why I said what I said. And nothing I said was in support of Sarah Palin so before you go spouting off about proving you wrong and some such nonsense, try reading what I wrote first without putting words in my mouth.
This does not provide insight, it provides humor. Just like it's a cheap shot whenever ANY side does it. These videos seem to do nothing but provide a laugh and a sense of superiority for whatever side made the video. If you can't find video's of Palin supporters who aren't like the people on this video that doesn't mean they are not there (the people I mean, not the video).

That's because if Palin's supporters were well informed, they wouldn't exist.

Re: Sarah Palin Book Signing: Interviews with Supporters
I think the point that everyone is missing so far is, "With pleather Steeler jackets and 'Lord of the Rings' hoodies, why are Palin supporters the best dressed?".

Re: Sarah Palin Book Signing: Interviews with Supporters
Actually a similar video was done for Barack Obama, except the people that were interviewed and showed no knowledge about his policies were ones interviewed right after they voted for him.
So videos like these prove nothing other than just to bash politicians and belittle their fan base.
