Dr Asimov describes the three laws of robotics.
First Law: A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
Second Law: A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
Third Law: A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Re: Isaac Asimov: The Three Laws of Robotics
I like that he pronounces 'robot' like Dr. Zoidberg. "Ro-bit."

For those who don't know :
This guy may have doctorates in multiple fields, but he's actually known for his science-fiction novels. His writing skills are IMHO only just above average for a serious writer, but his series (Foundation, Robot City,..) as a whole are petty amazing. I think he's dead now.

He is.
Also, the library at James Randi's JREF is called the Isaac Asimov Library.

Re: Isaac Asimov: The Three Laws of Robotics
He is king of science fiction! I robot is a great collection of short stories staring Susan Calvin not will smith as the main character. The stories take place with here narration and from her mind, presenting you will a dilemma or a puzzle every time. Foundation in my opinion is overrated super epic boring read. He also has great ideas in some more obscure novels like the The Gods Themselves where the aliens must mate using three of them. But each one is a different gender. 3 distinct genders. Lets just hope Hollywood dosnt come along and starts screwing up every Asimov novel just like Phillip K Dick( except bladerunner)

Re: Isaac Asimov: The Three Laws of Robotics
It the corollary "or through inaction" that gets you into trouble. That's where you'd get your ROBUTS taking action of their own accord. imo the clause needs to go entirely, the other laws work just fine.

Re: Isaac Asimov: The Three Laws of Robotics
Either your not understanding the law, or I'm not understanding your point.
The law is intended to prevent robots from putting a human in a hazardous situation and then standing by and doing nothing when harm comes to them. ie, a robot helps a blind person cross a street, but then abandons him in the middle of the cross walk and lets a car run over him.

Re: Isaac Asimov: The Three Laws of Robotics
Through inaction you have allowed people to be executed in the state of Virginia, through inaction you have allowed people to be executed in the state of Texas, through inaction you have allowed American soldiers to die in Iraq, through inaction you have allowed Iraqi civilians to die in Iraq, through inaction you have allowed a child to fall and hurt his knee, through inaction you have allowed a women to get food poisoning, through inaction you have allowed a 23 year old to start smoking, through inaction you have failed to cure his cancer at 70, you have "through inaction allow(ed) a human being to come to harm".

Re: Isaac Asimov: The Three Laws of Robotics
Ah, but what of the zeroth law of robotics:
A robot may not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.
Which supersedes laws one through three, allowing a robot to directly or indirectly harm a human if he has come to the conclusion that said harm would prevent humanity from a greater harm.
