Science of Scams: Ouija Board Revealed!
How do you explain the movement of the glass on the Ouija board? If its not spirits, then what is it?

From Science of Scams with Derren Brown.

This just in: Ouija boards aren't real. And in other headlines: Bigfoot was a man in an ape suit and the Lochness Monster is really a branch floating in the water. Coming up later we visit a jackelope farm.

That wasn't really "extraordinary" Mr. Brown.

Typically, when something happens and a person doesn't understand it, they're most likely to attribute it to whatever belief they're most vested in at the time.

Wow, Ouija boards are a scam?! That's some fine detective work there, Sherlock.

You guys miss the point. It's about having one definitive video that clearly proves that they aren't real and explains the reason people fall for them. So next time some idiot claims to you that they are real you can point them to this video and not have to bother with them any more.

I think the video and the site it's associated with is really quite good.

You make a good argument and I do get the point-I guess I am just amazed that they felt the need to do a segment on something that I thought was widely known not to be real, such as Bigfoot and Lochness.

A product by Hasbro!

There were 122 reviews on the product when I checked it. From the first couple I read the people seem to believe it is very real. I can't imagine somebody would buy one of these if they knew how it really worked. Unfortunately people believe a lot of stupid shit, even smart people.

Hmmm...interesting. George Carlin once said that the popular belief was that people aren't as dumb as you think they are and he said that the truth is just the opposite-people are NOT as smart as you give them credit. So I guess I was overestimating the general population. I was wrong on this one.

Won't work on believers and con-artists

If you prove that it was people moving the glass and not spirits they will say it was the spirits moving their hand. If you disprove that spirits were moving their hands they will say they will say it was the spirits were moving the glass. And the logic circle will go on.

It still begs the question why you need to be touching the glass for it to be moved by spirits. Ultimately people believe because they want to no matter what you tell them or prove to them.

Re: Science of Scams: Ouija Board Revealed!
Draw two intersecting lines on a piece of paper pointing north, south, east and west (pretty much like the lines on an xy graph)

Get the person to hold a pendulum still as possible above the intersection and tell them not to move their arm at all but in their mind to think "left, right, left, right" over and over again. The pendulum will eventually start to move like that and then tell them to do the same for "up, down", then clockwise etc.

The will pretty quickly realise that it's possible for their mind to control their movements without them knowing it.
