McCain vs. the Internet
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) introduced a bill to gut NET Neutrality, and was paid-off by Telecom. Rachel Maddow talks with Xeni Jardin, BoingBoing Co-editor. From MSNBC and msnbc.com

Re: McCain vs. the Internet
This is actually a very important issue if we value our (mostly) free and open access to websites. Telecoms are trying to add a myriad of controls that would serve to turn the net into their own personal version of network television - or into something like China.

Re: McCain vs. the Internet
Let's simplify.

What if your ISP decided to make MandC unavailable to you because they took advertising dollars from another linkdump?

Important issue? Let's magnify it a little bit. What if your only source of news was Fox News Channel?

Re: McCain vs. the Internet
Better that we have a governmet run "FCC" for the internet that could regulate obsenity and political endorsements during campaign season.

Re: McCain vs. the Internet
You are aware that the proposed FCC rule allows Internet users to do whatever they want; while McCain's bill says the "last mile" Internet providers are free to mess with us at will. You did pick up on that subtlety, didn't you?

Under McCain's bill, an ISP can go so far as to algorithmically change the content it delivers to us and we'd never know that what we're getting is not what the server was sending.

Yay, Freedom!

Re: McCain vs. the Internet
Yes I'm glad you agree this is better. Better because this sort of restriction could be worked around, where as the one McCain is proposing couldn't be. =P

Re: McCain vs. the Internet
I'm sure you could get around it pretty easily. Prolly by configuring your network settings to use some anonymous proxy. I think that's how they get around filtering in China.

Re: McCain vs. the Internet
I don't know if you're aware of this, but proxies are actually accessed through your Internet connection.

But even if there were some technical means for the most skilled 1% of users to get around the telecom's slime pit, I can't wait till corporate entities in the United States start behaving like the Communist Party of China.

Yay, Freedom!

Re: McCain vs. the Internet
Ya you prolly use whatever proxy your ISP provides unless you configure your network settings to use some specific proxy outside your ISP. But then again, I may not know what the hell I'm talking about either.

Re: McCain vs. the Internet
The rest of the Internet is on the other side of your ISP's router. You can have all the uppity anti-AT&T and Comcast-hatin' traffic you want on your side of the router, but as soon as you try to address any service outside of your house, it goes through their router.

If they're allowed to mess with your data stream, it doesn't matter what proxy you politely ask their router to cover your tracks with. I think they'll know it's you, since you're on the other end of your line and all.

Re: McCain vs. the Internet
It ok Rachel. We're spending taxpayer money to upgrade Senator McCain's carrier pidgeons into bionic pidgeons that will be able to deliver e-mails to Senator via a built in fax machine.
