Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) proposed an amendment to the 2010 Defense Appropriations bill that would withhold defense contracts from companies like KBR “if they restrict their employees from taking workplace sexual assault, battery and discrimination cases to court.”
It passed, 68 YEAs, 30 NAYs, 2 NOT VOTING.

Personally I think Franken should have been asking for even more restrictions and those sorts of clauses should be made void in the case of any physical injury at all.

I agree. Broader legislation would've been more appropriate.
On the other hand, the spectacle of thirty senators voting against the "no more government spending on rape companies" amendment provides for better humor value and less wiggle room for defending their position.

One would've assumed the contracting outfits were not bursting at the seams with rapists. But judging by how vehemently some of them have been opposing the amendment targeting sex abusers, now I'm starting to wonder.

I don't know what you're doing in your spare time, but if your personal life includes taking taxpayer dollars for your corporation while contractually denying your employees access to the courts in cases of sexual battery, you might need to either change your employment contract or stop taking government money.
I'm just don't object all that much to such a government intrusion into my government-financed contractor business in a government-controlled war zone.

You'd think those senators would have the political sense not to get caught voting against such an uncontroversial bit of legislation, especially when it's going to go through with or without their help.
I can just see next year's campaign television spots now. Carefully chosen still frame of Republican incumbent during a half-blink and mouth in a contorted talking or eating position. Image slowly zooms in as it switches to white-and-black negative. Cue discordant cinematic music as that attack-ad guy's narration starts in...
There just doesn't seem to be any upside to voting against this amendment in a floor vote.

I think the GOP is banking on total economic and social collapse and is doing everything it can to distance itself from anything which might later be construed as contributing to the collapse, which means anything which could be called spending and anything that might be considered to 'impede the free market," even though Republican corruption and cronyism is what brought about present circumstance. I mean, come on: palin? McCain lost on purpose.
