Gary Webb explains his 1996 "Dark Alliance" investigative reporting series linking the CIA to the birth of the crack cocaine industry. He talks about the defensive measures taken to weather the pressure brought against him and the San Jose Mercury News, and the paper's ultimate acquiescence.

After a year of pressure from his editors, Webb quit the paper, In the subsequent years, Webb was unable to get work as a journalist. In 2004, he was found with two gunshot wounds to the head in what was ruled a suicide.

The story of Gary Webb breaks my heart.

Dark Alliance and Kill The Messenger are highly worth reading, if unsettling and upsetting.
