Polygraphs are used in thousands of investigations and job screenings, but can a machine really detect whether someone is lying? Penn and Teller meet people whose lives were ruined by faulty lie-detector results.

I'm not sure making fun of the girl (Chrissy) at the end was the way to go, she was lied to. She, like many people thinks the polygraph works (the point of the show).
Plus P&T's; "we don't know dick about Mike, and we don't want to know...it's none of our business", seemed a little insensitive despite the input to the show.

It seems like he didn't tell her that he kissed somebody on the neck on the dance floor although there is no way to know for sure what he had previously told her. Either way when she hears that he has admitted to in appropriate sexual contact, she isn't thinking a kiss on the neck and the examiner knew that.

No actually you got it wrong, it matters if the person being tested thinks it works, not the person that wants somebody else to be tested.

Insensitive to who? They demonstrated why they think the lie detector is absolute BS, so they have done all they need to for the couple to get back to sanity.
I think they were right to mock the girl in this show. She doesn't deserve any more respect for doing that than if she had gone to a psychic to get relationship advice. She wouldn't have resorted to that if she had done any research at all outside of watching cop movies. This show might give her the wakeup call she will need before she will ever be happy in any future relationships.

I think most people DO think lie detectors work, the 'sphincter trick' certainly isn't common knowledge. Here in the UK it's not used in law but certainly not EVERYBODY 'knows' why.

I still think making out she's some sort of hellbitch for lacking technical knowledge of a lie detector is cheap. Whether they work or not is irrelevant, the fact she needed validation in the first place is something they needed to address, and validation doesn't necessarily make someone a bad person.

That's not the problem. It's that she was clearly forcing the guy to go take the test. They she immediately assumes his guilt just because some random who has has known the guy for an hour lables him as a lyar.

No, but they type of validation selected in this case makes that someone very stupid and in need of the schooling they received.
