Kuroshio Sea: Second Largest Aquarium Tank
This was shot at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in Japan.

The main tank called the 'Kuroshio Sea' holds 7,500-cubic meters (1,981,290 gallons) of water and features the world's second largest acrylic glass panel, measuring 8.2 meters by 22.5 meters with a thickness of 60 centimeters. Whale sharks and manta rays are kept amongst many other fish species in the main tank.

The music is "Please don't go" by Barcelona.

These genius' should realise that this could easily be replicated with a large video screen and some quality CGI. There'd be no need for all the expense and to have these poor creatures endlessly circle in an environment 1/20000000000'th the size of their natural habitat.

The feedings costs are bound to be astronomical. I mean, what in God's name are they giving those whale sharks to snack on? Don't they eat tons of krill? Besides, those creatures can become huge, but will never reach normal size in this prison, their minds stunted in this artificial (and, from the looks of it, dull) environment.

There's sure to be a hidden cost here, like with fish bred in captivity (for human consumption). That's supposed to be sustainable. Hah!

Still, what I remarked above, it's an impressive sight (relatively speaking); and I don't mean to kick the caretakers in the groin with my snipy observations, which I think aren't unfounded. This display may raise a lot of awareness among people, advance scientific knowledge, and other good things. I'm more in favor of, say, 'displaying' creatures that are cared for in a realistic natural habitat, though.

Okay, I'll shut up now, before we get into keeping parrots in cages, or lions, tigers, and panthers behind bars, and you name it.

Though it was probably not your intention, you've got me thinking about how a whaleshark steak would be...and the likely hood they'll eventually make it into to market.

Hint: board the next plane to Japan and enter a restaurant of your choice. Don't worry: they're all fish restaurants, in various degrees. Riffle some notes and speak in hushed tones to the owner about *whispers whispers*

I doubt it would be easy/possible to duplicate as you suggest. But you are right when you suggest that it's not fair to these creatures, no matter how beautiful it may seem to us. :(

Re: Kuroshio Sea - 2nd largest aquarium tank i
That's an interesting thought to consider. At first I would think they would be more content to live in a safe environment that would extend their lifespan, where they are well fed and cared for.

But then we must acknowledge that a cage is still a cage, no matter how comfortable it is.

Do these fish care that they are locked up? Do they have any concept of being imprisoned in these conditions? Does their perception really matter at all, or is just a human manifestation? Is it because we have the ability to discern that there's a distinction between right and wrong that we project our own morality onto other beings, or is there a universal truth that is undeniable and supersedes all else?

Very cool. I've been to the Georgia Aquarium, which is the largest in the world. They have a very similar viewing room, with whale sharks, and such.

Just amazing.

I thought the Baltimore Aquarium was right up there in size. Maybe it was number of species contained? No matter.
