Rachel Maddow: Obama Calls For Prolonged Detention
Rachel Maddow critiques President Obama's speech outlining his proposal for the prolonged detention and preventative incarceration of people who "might" commit crimes. Although he refers to "terrorists" and Al Queda, this radical new claim of unconstitutional presidential power threatens to be used on citizens as well, remembering that most civil liberties have already been stripped away and that American citizens are already considered "enemy combatants".

Re: Rachel Maddow Destroys Obama on Lying to the American People
A colossal mistake by Obama to place politics in front of the core values of this country and some might go so far as humanity.

Others might suggest that he needs to do this in order to pass other initiatives through a legislative body thick with goop. My opinion is that this represents a poor compromise.

If evidence is tainted, the law says that the defendant must be set free. There is no limitless incarceration without a trial for people, no matter how vile their supposed crimes may have been.

My guess is that when he became President and got briefed by counter-terrorism officials with classified information, he came to realize that the world is a lot more complicated place than he thought, and you can't just sprinkle magic "hopenchange" dust and make terrorism go away.

Re: Rachel Maddow Destroys Obama on Lying to the American People
It doesn't really matter how bad terrorism is. If we lose our rights, then what's the point? The long term disadvantages of losing rights will far outweigh the perceived short term "safety" advantages (and I use the word "safety" in a very loose sense).

I really don't see why releasing these so-called "terrorists" is such a big deal, anyway. There aren't that many in Guantanamo right now to begin with. It's not like fighting a few more insurgents in Afghanistan (if that is where they return to) is going to make any difference. As for those who would stay on American soil, I doubt it would be that hard for the FBI or CIA to keep an eye on them and try them for terrorism later with REAL evidence.

This whole ordeal reeks of fear mongering. It's not like any of these detainees are going to make a difference in the long run. The simple fact is that America is a relatively free society. As long as it remains free, terrorists will be able to exploit that freedom, but I wouldn't want it any other way.

I agree wholeheartedly with your viewpoint.

Re: Rachel Maddow Destroys Obama on Lying to the American People
Don't let that constitution thingy get in the way! Since when does choosing to actually abide by the constitution a political choice? If this is what you are saying, then you're basically saying that NOT following the constitution is also a valid political choice. To stray away from our constitution is extreme in my opinion, no matter what the issue.

When Americans choose not to enforce the constitution, then they are most likely making a choice based on fear. What ever happened to proud patriotic Americans willing to die for these principles? Our nation has become so pussified that we are not willing to die for our rights. I would rather follow the constitution or die trying rather than to change our principles and values for terrorists.

Obama can go fuck himself. As a matter of fact, here's an idea for him: why doesn't he hop in his plane and fly over to Bush's ranch and go roll in the hay with that fucker? They can both count green shoots there, and with any luck they'll be able to see some. They'll be on a ranch after all, though you never know in Texas (and Bush may not be a good farmer, eh?).

I respect Obama for being somewhat centrist. However, he's gone the wrong way on a few things. His foreign policy and drug policy is dead on. But he's also choosing to do bad things like increase our debt like crazy and illegally detaining people forever.

Re: Rachel Maddow: Obama Calls For Prolonged Detention
Not to be a douche... :) But can any public servant who illegally detains people forever ever be considered a "Centrist?". I'm sorry, but I think not. Obama is Right Wing. America has facistically moved so far to the Right that Obama only seems sorta middle.

And don't get me wrong. I don't think Obama is the great Satan or whatever. He's just another political lickspittle paraded as our latest savior but really working to serve corporate interests instead of us.

All I'm saying is maybe Obama has a little bit of Ed Exley in him.

If you don't know who I'm talking about, watch the film, "L.A. Confidential." with Russel Crowe and Guy Pierce. Its a good flick.
