Re: Pat Condell: Ban the Burka
This is so offensive and I'm a principled Atheist! It's true that the burqa is not required by Islam, but to call this neurotic (only possible in advanced society) and "primitive" (only possible in regressive society) is in fact Islamophobic and most of all it's Euroscentric. God, where is this guy coming from? I love when reactionaries use liberal language because it really confuses people and that's sad. He just came out and said we're at war with Islam, which people rarely do. There's such a lack of understanding how bigotry works, so people just rephrase it and suddenly it doesn't exist.

Ok, but now tell us if you think the Burka is, in fact, oppression of women.

Re: Pat Condell: Ban the Burka
I agree that such presentation may offend some Muslims. But let’s put this in proper perspective.
I will use example that occurred during the war in Bosnia in areas populated by majority of moderate Muslims (with long historical and cultural presence in that area of Europe). During and after the war some of local religious leaders started introducing radical Islam, and propagating shariah law. This was in some ways influenced by radical Islamic countries, which can also explain presence of mujahideen from those regions. Bosnian Muslims openly criticized such occurrences, as it was not part of their culture, identity, or lifestyle. Women in burkhas started appearing in public, and local population started reacting with displeasure “this is not Iran”, and other comments along those lines.
If majority of Bosnian Muslims see those manifestations of radical Islam as something they would rather not have in their country, I don’t see why Western Europe should react any differently.
As much as I see KKK robes as synonymous with oppression, slavery, and segregation, burkhas for me have same place in history of human kind.
I can’t see those robes acceptable for any other use except private costume parties or comedy movies.

Re: Pat Condell: Ban the Burka
I wouldn't care if women were equal to men in Muslim society save for the burka. However, that simply isn't true. Women in Islamic countries (Saudia Arabia, for example) are second class citizens with fewer property and human rights than men. That's why women in such countries can be punished for being raped. While the burka may just be a garment, it is symbolic of these inexcusable inequalities and human rights violations.
I'm sure not ALL Muslims belittle women (just as not ALL Christians deny evolution or believe in talking snakes), but the fact is that many Islamic republics do treat women poorly. Couple that with the fact that Islamic organizations and immigrants are desperately trying to impose their laws and customs (including degradation of women) onto western societies. I don't care what you call me, but I WILL stand up against this. If that means I'm a bigot, then so be it.

Re: Pat Condell: Ban the Burka
I will also add that all societies are not created equal, nor are they all compatible. Western societies, especially those like the US, value personal freedom and responsibility over the common good. Contrarily, communistic societies, such as the old USSR and China, value the common good over personal freedom.
Suffice to say, these different value systems are not compatible. There will be conflicts, especially in a freedom-loving country when a religious minority tries to impose its will over others because Allah/god/Tom Cruise says so.

Re: Pat Condell: Ban the Burka
I guess I'm in favor of the Burka ban. Although it makes me feel icky knowing I'm in support of something that appeals to Christian fundamentalist bigots.

Re: Pat Condell: Ban the Burka
Don't underestimate the security threat.
In India there are cases where a man wearing a burka enters a womans restroom and robs a woman at knife point.
One of my cousin's babies was almost kidnapped from the maternity hospital by a woman wearing a burka. Fortunatly the staff confronted her and she ran off.
