Re: Penn & Teller Bullshit: College
Database has a crossed link or something. I just tried to post the following URL as a mirror but for some reason it states that it's already submitted as a George Carlin clip:

WTF? Is this Bullshit? Heh.

I watched this a few days before the Keith John Sampson Case was posted as a headline (http://www.milkandcookies.com/link/165967/detail/) and wanted to submit this, i just couldn't find a good source. Spam seems to have more cunning ways in obtaining clips.

Extreme liberals. First they come for your guns, then your books, then they restrict your freedom of speech.
"You don't have a right not to be offended". Pretty well sums it up.

Things to keep in mind :
This show isn't designed around the idea of exposing the truth or letting proponents of different ideas battle things out on a level playing field. It's geared towards portraying things as bullshit and making edgy statements while maintaining an air of validity.
I'm glad you feel vindicated in your clearly advanced world views though. Did the show give you a hard-on? It's good to get hard-ons. It has been shown to alleviate latent anxiety over the extreme tinyness of penisses.

And considering that you're hung like a horse, you can probably pick any M&C gal you like.
(And considering that one day you will change your avatar, my above comment will only acquire more power, as all of them are wont to do ...)

Re: Penn & Teller Bullshit: College
But we need college to indoctrinate impressionable youth about the values of socialism and class warfare. They might grow up to be self-reliant and individually responsible adults otherwise!

Re: Penn & Teller Bullshit: College
While I agree with most of what the video talked about (i.e. lack of free speech on college campuses), the simple fact is most employers won't even consider you if you don't have a college degree. Sure, you will only use a fraction of what you learned in college (or maybe nothing at all), but you still need to have that piece of paper. Otherwise, practice saying, "Do you want fries with that?"

Re: Penn & Teller Bullshit: College
While I don't really like the video, I think they pointed out more than a few examples of people who are living proof of how wrong you are about needing a piece of paper.

Re: Penn & Teller Bullshit: College
The video was, after all, performed by Penn Fraser Jillette, who is an unabashed Libertarian.
Do I agree with all or most of the points put forth by he, Star Price, or Teller in it? Nope. But I did find it amusing.
You know, I've softened my stance on the extreme right over the years. They have every right to be wrong. ;-) They can be just as vocal about it as I can, though. And it's not a pissing contest about who can scream the loudest or the most often.

Re: Penn & Teller Bullshit: College
Some of those people that were mentioned are actors (Tom Cruise), rappers (Dr. Dre). Others were people who lived long ago when college degrees were not as important or as available (Ben Franklin, Abe Lincoln, etc).
What I said concerns the average Joe in today's world and today's circumstances, not special cases which happened 100 or 200 years ago. Sure, there will always be stories about some guy or another who started his own company or who had a few hip-hop hits. However, when it comes to the average person, most companies will not consider you for a significant position unless you have a college degree. In some cases, companies may only actively recruit people graduating from specific colleges.
I'm not saying you won't be able to get a job without a college degree. I'm saying that most people won't be able to get a decent-paying job with career options down the road without a college degree.

Re: Penn & Teller Bullshit: College
You're right. You probably need a degree to work FOR a Gates, Branson or any other successful business owner. But not to become one.

Re: Penn & Teller Bullshit: College
A few cherry-picked counterexamples does not refute the fact that median income is VERY strongly correlated with level of education.

Re: Penn & Teller Bullshit: College
Education and college are not the same thing. They clearly mentioned self education.
By: gerrywastaken
Re: Penn & Teller Bullshit: College
The "level of education" I am referring to is, in fact, high school vs. associate's degree vs. bachelor's degree, etc. Higher levels are strongly correlated with higher income. This is not in any way a controversial statement.
If you want me to take your point seriously, you need to show that "self education" is likely to produce the same results, or better. Not by cherry-picking examples, but with actual statistics.
Good luck with that.

Re: Penn & Teller Bullshit: College
Its not a choice between chemical engineering and sweeping floors. Ask a foreman how hard it is to find a good machinist nowadays.
We need more people with technical skills that are applicable in a productive economy in America. There are too many kids going to an expensive 4 year liberal arts college, staying undeclared until they are juniors, until finally getting a degree in "ethnic sepratist studies" or writing a thesis entitled "Lesbian Journalism in the 20th century." They graduate with enormous amounts of debt and end up waiting tables anyway.
You are better off getting vocational training right out of high school and getting a job as a skilled technician. You will make more money over the long run too.

Like all my friends who went and did IT degrees and are now doing support calls for an ISP. Very sad! I feel they were greatly mislead as to what was truly important. They were so busy getting a piece of paper that they didn't have time to actually learn.

Re: Penn & Teller Bullshit: College
I went to Devry and got the three year degree. Not exactly a real "college" and I've heard a couple of people say a three year degree isn't the same as a four year degree. I disagree since I don't see how you can have different flavors of batchelor's degrees. I've never heard of anything like that besides what these couple of people said.
Anyways, I started working as a PC technician for AIG through a temp company. Now I do support calls for an autodialer company in my home town. I do like it because the things we do are actually pretty technical - like setups (hard to explain). Anyways, if you have a technical degree there are other types of jobs out there for you beside tech support, you just have to look and be willing to move. Tell your freinds with IT degrees to get a job with a school district or something. There appears to be some room for advancement and experience there.
Anyways now I'm about $40,000 in debt and realize I could have got this job without a degree. Employers in my field place more value in experience than degrees or certifications. However, the technical field is probably unique in this respect. I mean you can't become a doctor or nurse through experience.

Re: Penn & Teller Bullshit: College
Another point I wanted to make is I'm happy to have moved away from fast and into tech support. Don't mean to sound elitist, I've worked at many different fast food jobs for years before and during college.

Re: Penn & Teller Bullshit: College
The good thing about learning technical stuff in college is that I know have a basic foundation of technical knowledge. I know just enough about IT stuff that when I encounter something knew (quite frequently), I can learn it more easily than if I didn't have the experience of constantly learning new things in college. So I guess my point is that college appears to help people learn new things more easily, not to make them proficient at one particular thing.

Re: Penn & Teller Bullshit: College
My brother, who is usually pretty hardcore right-winger, once heard someone making a very similiar rant about college as Penn makes and said, "Psht, you only get out of college what you put in." Very true.
If you go to college, take on lots of debt, party most of the time, and get a BS degree in something silly then yes, you'll be regretting it.
Currently, I'm not in the exact field that I majored in, but I still apply MANY of the same skills (educational, networking, ect.) that I learned in college that I would have had a hard time gaining elsewhere.
The first season or two of this show was dead-on, but it seems that they really started scraping the bottom of the barrell after that.
