I don't see how, as democrat, you can support legalization of Marijuana when in the same breath you say you want more gun control. So you want the government to get out of your face about pot, but you want them to get more in your face regarding gun rights? I thought this progressive idea was more about getting away from the nanny state, not moving more towards it. I thought democrats cared about civil rights and cared about upholding the principle of government BY THE PEOPLE. In order for this to ultimately function properly, the PEOPLE must be armed well enough to counteract a government coup (most likely at the federal level) against the people. The second amendment had nothing to do with hunting. It had to do with the democratic principle that the people hold the power and therefore should have the means to protect themselves from tyranny. Maybe I'm full of false preconcieved notions here. Or maybe the principles of being a democrat are starting to be changed to be more "crazy" liberal.

I think the difference is really about causing harm to others. Marijuana is pretty much only dangerous to oneself, and even that is a bit of an overstatement. Guns are generally used to harm other beings.

I think that line of thinking is what turns a lot of people off about extreme liberalism and extreme conservatism. They both support laws limiting personal liberties for the public good. The democrats could be a much stronger group if they would drop some of these silly agendas that aren't even democratic concepts. These agendas only cater to the extreme liberal fringe group and turn off a good portion of the general public.

I don't see how, as [a republican], you can [not] support [gun control] when in the same breath you say you want [abortions made illegal]. So you want the government to get out of your face about [guns], but you want them to get more in your face regarding [a woman's GOD GIVEN RIGHT to choose]? I thought this [conservative] idea was more about getting away from the nanny state, not moving more towards it. [rant removed for time sake] Maybe I'm full of false [preconceived - "i" before "e" EXCEPT after "c"] notions here. Or maybe the principles of being a [republican] are starting to be changed to be more "crazy" [rednecks]. [Editors Note: meh. Whatever.]

Wow you sure do make an excellent point when you say "meh. Whatever"! Did I stump you?

I don't really try to understand why republicans think the way they do. Sorry, but I don't have the answer to that one. I'm just trying to understand why the democratic party is moving more towards extreme liberalism. Grosses me out.

If you think the Democratic Party is moving towards extreme liberalism, you're dead wrong. They're pretty centrist, and a lot of them are leaning right. Obama is pretty centrist himself, mostly because he's a pragmatist. Congress doesn't seem to have a genuine interest in creating a real health care plan, and that's with Democratic control. Also, the war in Afghanistan is being expanded upon and the bombing missions are killing more and more civilians.

Doesn't sound too progressive to me.

Good point. Obama does appear to be a centrist. However, the party itself seems to be sliding to the left more and more. Both parties are moving further to each side. That's why were starting to see the libertarian party gain momentum.
