Re: The Truth About Japanese Restaurants
The clip is actually from an Australian comedy show from the early 90's called 'The Late Show'. The series (which only lasted for two years) was the funniest thing I've ever seen on TV. It was pure genius!

Re: The Truth About Japanese Restaurants
Yes, I was 15 and 16 years old when The Late Show was on TV (1992-3) and I was TOTALLY OBSESSED with it - spent every Saturday night at 10pm at home! In fact, I have a forum dedicated to The Late Show (http://kim.nyclondon.com/forum) and just paid someone A$200 to purchase all the episodes on DVD that he taped off the TV all those years ago even through the quality is crap - check the site if you want to get in touch with him.

It's stuff like this that makes me wanna eat stuff from the good ol' USA. All natural, easy-to-pronounce food, with high-quality ingredients.

Re: The Truth About Japanese Restaurants
Oh please. Japanese people have a tradition of eating sushi and taking off their shoes when entering a house. Just because someone made up some English words to what Japanese people were saying doesn't mean jack. Stop the ignorance!!!!

Re: The Truth About Japanese Restaurants
Didn't you read the comments above? It's a joke! The clip is from "The Late Show" an Australian comedy show. These people are actors. This isn't someone video-taping Japanese people without their knowledge and then putting subtitles over what they are saying.
By: mcgern
Re: The Truth About Japanese Restaurants
In reality, the dialogue matches the subtitles fairly closely. There are a few phrases that they've taken liberties with (e.g. where the subtitle says "You can't say that!", she actually says "You're lying"). And, obviously, "teppanyaki", "sushi", etc. aren't swear words -- that's just part of the act.
Speaking of acting, the actors are pretty good. Very expressive. If someone had no clue, the actors might very well be convincing.

Re: The Truth About Japanese Restaurants
I know fo' sho' that sushi is a very offensive word to asians. Yeah of course its an act but sum of those words are slang terms.
By: XxAnDiLeQxX
Re: The Truth About Japanese Restaurants
That why I said that they've taken liberties with some of the expressions. Some of the terms that were spoken don't have analogues in English.

Re: The Truth About Japanese Restaurants
Where did you hear this?!? I'm Asian and the word 'sushi' doesn't offend me, in fact it makes me hungry. I wonder if all the sushi restaurants in Japan offend the people there? I wonder why restaurants with names like "kuru-kuru sushi" don't offend people?!?
Just to clarify, the word 'sushi' is not offensive.

Re: The Truth About Japanese Restaurants
Being Japanese, I found this to be very funny. I've watched this clip at least 20 times and still find it funny.
If you understand the Japanese language, what they're saying is very close to the subtitled text, not an EXACT translation, but pretty much the same.
All of those words are real Japanese foods (sushi, yakitorik, teppanyaki, tempura) and are not swear words at all.
I thought it was funny because an outsider, such as an Australian or American, may think that the Japanese traditions, such as taking off your shoes, sitting on the floor, or eating with chopsticks, may seem unusual and absurd, and this video clip demonstrates how the Japanese only created these fake traditions as a practical joke. (Btw, the Japanese people really do observe these traditions, and you can expect to remove your shoes when you visit a nice Japanese restaurant. If you visit a McDonald's in Japan, you of course won't have to remove your shoes however.)

Re: The Truth About Japanese Restaurants
it's as if we went to another counrty and called hamburgers or steaks something relaly bad, like 'shitfaces' and 'cock gobblers'. This clip makes as if the words 'sushi' and 'tempura' are some kind of really obscene japanese curse words in reality

Re: The Truth About Japanese Restaurants
As stated this is from The Late Show (D-Gen) - true champagne sketch comedy! It was filmed in Melbourne (Aus) in 1993. The actors are actually a waiter and chef from a Japanese restaurant in Melbourne. The D-gen told them to throw in random words, e.g. Barry Mannilow, Tempura. It was originally filmed with Australians dressed up as Japanese but that version stunk! As stated sushi, tempura aren't swear words, Manko now that's a swear word!
