This video isn't the best representation of the original in its recorded form. I thought Klaus Nomi kind of tainted it, though this is pretty funny to watch because he definately made the performance much more absurd. Personally, I'm a fan of both the Nirvana and David Bowie versions, but I wouldn't judge this live performace against Nirvana's.

Nirvana was better than Bowie-? What the hell is wrong with you? Cobain's grungy crap voice couldn't ever hold a candle to Bowie. His crappy suicidal attitude was excrutiatingly evident through the entire cover.

I find it funny that the rest of the band is not so elaborately dressed. Kind of ruins the space-age feel.

To be fair, SNL performances tend to be bad, even when they are by performers that are typically good.
Also, I have to be honest that I didn't know that this was David Bowie's song first before Nirvana covered it...

Yeah, the Nirvana cover is excellent, but the original Bowie recording is excellent too. This SNL performance doesn't do it justice.
