Those living in a temperate zone could try Lady's Mantle for a sort of similar effect. I think it's a fine plant, especially in groups or along paths. Looks splendid after rain.

I was expecting the puppet (ALF--alien life form) to be doing a science demo for about 15 seconds when I first saw this description. Only slightly disappointed.
