Good clip. One thing though. Stephen mentions that he has to lay out the background details of the joke in order for the viewers to get it (2:25) and yet he says later that he doesn't because the viewers would not get the joke unless they already knew the news behind the joke. (2:34)

No, he says the STUDIES saying a lot of viewers get their news from Colbert report or Jon Stewart and other late night programs are 'a little off'. He believes that the shows work because a lot of people already have somewhat of a grasp on current events. And hence would find the jokes funny, with or without pre-joke explanation.
What an immensely smart guy, even if his show can be pretty sparse at times.

I think that he stated that he has to lay out the playing field for a joke prior to stating that he thinks some viewers already have background news info.
