Olbermann to Retire O'Reilly Schtick, Proposes Fox News
Keith Olbermann suggests that it was Fox News - by drilling the term "Tiller the Baby Killer" into viewers' heads - that instigated the murder of abortion doctor George Tiller.

With that, he says an advertiser boycott isn't enough of a solution, but rather to "quarantine" Fox News by encouraging people to tell others not to watch. In that regard, he has even volunteered to retire his Lou Grant-esque caricature of Fox News host Bill O'Reilly.

Thanks for the merge Boss. And although the clips are substantially the same material, they're not the exact same. Editorial license? Sure. I'll gladly add that your source is certainly more complete.

An argument can be made that FOX News' is willing to do anything for ratings, regardless of the consequences.

Should MilkandCookies stop linking to Bill O'Reilly?

By "quarantine" do you mean censor bill o'reilly? Because I see little difference.

I'm thinking I'm in agreement with you Cheez. Although votes are sometimes hard to come by at times and are on the far end of the spectrum from being statistically accurate, I'd still like to let the people who come here make the choice.

Re: Olbermann to Retire O'Reilly Schtick, Proposes Fox News "Quarantine"
I also agree. I hate Bill, but I hate censorship more. Freedom of speech is about allowing others to speak their mind no matter how fucked up it might be. Thanks for pointing this out Cheez; I can't be sure I would have picked up on it (although I hope I would have).

Re: Olbermann to Retire O'Reilly Schtick, Proposes Fox News "Quarantine"
I don't think quarantine means censorship. Olbermann is just asking rational people to speak up next time they are chillin' in a dentists waiting room and fox news is on. Speak up as to why you don't want to watch the crap spewed by fox news before you get your teeth pulled. If they don't change the channel then it is our decision as consumers whether or not we ant to support the institution that allies themselves with the hate speech broadcast by fox news. This is a non-violent way of saying enough is enough, that I personally will not support businesses that believe fox news is a legitimate news channel to have playing in the background while your waiting for your pizza, etc.

Re: Olbermann to Retire O'Reilly Schtick, Proposes Fox News "Quarantine"
I've made a comment or two on here before about how the Bill O'Reilly's of the world would go away if we stopped paying attention to them. I believe that strongly, but I guess I assumed that readers of Milk and Cookies would infer my indictment of the general news viewer and his/her lack of healthy skepticism and critical thinking skills, and not the readers of a forum like "Milk and Cookies". I hope it doesn't make me a hypocrite to say that I DO think these posts have a part to play here, in a forum that has strongly established itself as populated by said thinkers and skeptics and is not likely to draw said dittoheads, at least not without causing them to challenge the acquiescent nature of their beliefs.

Smart people need to know what these guys are up to, and I think it's appropriate for them to be on here.

Re: Olbermann to Retire O'Reilly Schtick, Proposes Fox News "Quarantine"
I don't usually defend Fox news but STFU Keith Olbermann and quit exploiting Tiller's murder. It doesn't sound like O'Reilly advocated murder. He just stated the that Tiller was a baby killer, which he was. You see, that's what abortion doctors do - kill babies (literally). Don't get me wrong, Tiller's murder was an injustice. But don't tell me that this is the right wing media's fault for being anti-abortion and spreading their agenda. I call bullshit. You just have to realize that there are extremist/crazy people who are capable of murder/terrorism/whatever in all walks of life and you just have to deal with them as best you can without alienating a portion of the general public. You can't get rid of them by censoring the media or taking away gun rights.

Re: Olbermann to Retire O'Reilly Schtick, Proposes Fox News "Quarantine"
Is it not accurate to describe the bombing of an abortion clinic or the attack of a woman who goes there seeking medical care or the shooting of a physician who works there DOMESTIC TERRORISM?

The idea that these lunatics have come up with is that if they can't get legislators to create law that they agree with that they will take the law into their own hands and make it a fearful experience for women to be seen within 1000 feet of these clinics.

They claim that are not even citizens of the US and therefore the laws of the land do not apply to them. Thus, they need not abide by the laws.

Was Olbermann wrong for calling Fox News out for inciting Tiller's shooting? Maybe so. That's debatable. Was O'Reilly's on-air conduct in at least 29 instances deplorable? I don't see that as being questionable in any way.

Re: Olbermann to Retire O'Reilly Schtick, Proposes Fox News "Quarantine"
Although the term "terrorism" seems to be getting over used and it's definition has become blurred after the bush regime, I would have to agree that the murder of Tiller was a terrorist act because he is terrorizing a group of people - women who need abortions. Doesn't mean we need to get all nanny state over it and censor the media like that media brainwashing/propaganda crap that occurred after 9/11.

Bill O'Reilly's on-air conduct is usually deplorable. I agree with you on that.

Re: Olbermann to Retire O'Reilly Schtick, Proposes Fox News "Quarantine"
The FBI has a definition of "domestic terrorism" to keep things clear. This is what the most wanted people who get charged with it are charge with (and there have been abortion bombers charged with this before).

http://www.fbi.gov/publications/terror/terror2000_2001.htm

There is no single, universally accepted definition of terrorism. Terrorism is defined in the Code of Federal Regulations as “...the unlawful use of force and violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives.” (28 C.F.R. Section 0.85)

The FBI further describes terrorism as either domestic or international, depending on the origin, base, and objectives of the terrorist organization. For the purpose of this report, the FBI uses the following definitions of terrorism.

l Domestic terrorism refers to activities that involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any state; appear to be intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; to influence the policy of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States. [18 U.S.C. § 2331(5)]

Re: Olbermann to Retire O'Reilly Schtick, Proposes Fox News "Quarantine"
Individual states each have their own definition of terrorism. I'm not sure about Kansas, but New York's definition begins: "A person is guilty of a crime of terrorism when, with intent to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, influence the policy of a unit of government by intimidation or coercion, or affect the conduct of a unit of government by murder, assassination, or kidnapping, he or she commits a specified offense."

Re: Olbermann to Retire O'Reilly Schtick, Proposes Fox News "Quarantine"
It still astounds me, the degree of hypocrisy we allow. The notion of abortion as being unacceptable because it constitutes murder is galling. If abortion is unacceptable, then so is war. If killing innocent Americans means those who killed them are a group terrorist, then killing innocent Afghanis and Iraqis makes the United States a terrorist group. It's pretty clear that Billo supports (at least publicly) drastic action against a group of people, namely those who support and employ the practice of abortion. If he went on air and said "these infidels defy the words of Allah, and deserve death," he'd have his phone tapped at best, but more likely find himself a resident of Guantanamo Bay. How is it different to say "The Bible says these here'uns er sinners, and deserve tah fry!" How can we a accept such resounding cognitive dissonance? I just do not understand. God Bless Americans (and carpet-bomb the rest).

"...he is terrorizing a group of people - women who need abortions." And you lost me. What? He's "terrorizing" people who ask for his services? Did he berate the women while he did his work or something?

Ah, you're losing me there. Understand, some of us don't actually feel that all abortion is "baby murder." We don't know the facts of what was going on in those offices, all that we're hearing is O'Reilly's voice over and over again.

I just see the cold, tile floor of Planned Parenthood and a lot of very uncomfortable women.

Re: Olbermann to Retire O'Reilly Schtick, Proposes Fox News "Quarantine"
In order to have a legal abortion in the third trimester under Kansas law, the mother must have two MDs (none of whom can perform the procedure) certify that her life is endangered by the pregnancy and delivery of the child. Every one of Dr. George Tiller's abortions were within the framework of the law and he was careful to do so.

There is naturally a lot of hype over this incident but we all need to be careful to separate the wheat from the chaff.
