Not Working?
The stimulus package includes a "Buy American" clause that the steel and other U.S. industries lobbied hard for. However, U.S businesses that export overseas now fear foreign governments will retaliate.

Re: Buy American
Once again, Obama shows his soft spot for lobbyists; and that reminds me of another thing: didn't he say BEFORE he was elected that he wouldn't put any lobbyists in 'his' White House or take any money from them? Well, must have been one of his stump speeches. He's surrounded himself with lobbyists and accepted lots of money from lobbyists. What a surprise. This gets tiring.
What? This video is about something else? Oh. Something about protectionism, eh? Whining when some foreign country protects its market, while doing the same at home. Hypocrisy, it's called. Too weak to compete, too arrogant, too dumb. Bring in the government again. Cartel here, cartel there. Enforcement. America Number 1, ad nauseum. Shit for sale. Buy now. No, better yet: you must buy our shit now. Quick, before we go bankrupt.
Good luck with these morons. Now, those steel workers who work for 50% less I respect. If only their boss had some spine. Just make the best goddamn steel for the best price. The American people will buy it. The Chinese will take note, perhaps make better stuff as well. Humanity better off.
Which shit-for-brains came up with the idea to fund American Steel and force the Americans to buy that? Sounds like something right out of the Soviet Union. Won't work. Let the market work. Take the pain. Take the gain. Learn. Improve.
Too bad most people don't seem to care about their environment. It would made life MUCH better if they did. Buy quality products near your home. What crazy people buy poisoned toys for their children -- and buy these toys from child slaves on the other side of the world? Madness.
"Here, little Billy. Here's a toy car I bought for you. Wash your hands after playing, remember?"
"Papa, what does M-ma-made in C-C-China mean?"
Anyway, I hear these little coffins are made in China, too. Sort of makes sense in this crazy world.

Re: Buy American
I rarely comment any more, and you still beat me to it, Dub-2! [shakes fist] :)
We may not completely agree, but your last few sentences illustrate the situation. Perfectly.

Re: Buy American
Howdy again, BHG.
I'm curious what you'd do if you had been the president of the US of A. Your assessment of the problem is right on, but surely you won't force people to buy America first, or subsidize industry? I take it that you, as president, would give a rousing speech that clearly shows America's fallacies and urge people to work for a better future, not to impose a heavy hand on the economy (even under the guise of 'helping out')? Afterward, or hopefully before, you'd hire me to sniff out CIA snipers and rip out their throats. Yes?

Re: Buy American
That was ... very interesting, but I could've done without the nude photos of yours ...

Re: Buy American
What? It just seemed impolite not to send 'em after you emailed photos of you and that...what was it? A Tonka Truck? I still can't believe the whole thing fit. Yes, sir...good ol' American steel... ;)
Re: Buy American
The US buys *so much* Chinese (and other foreign) goods, there's no rational reason to fear that if we buy American steel first as part of our "Economic Stimulus" that we'll invite some sort of trade Jihad. (Wait a minnit, where have I heard that kind of fear mongering before...)
If China wants the US to continue fueling their economic expansion, the US needs to start making a little money on its own. We've already maxed out our credit cards and lost our homes. We're like junkies who need to wash a few car windows first before we can go back and buy more product. And China knows this. Sorta.
But this 60 Minutes job has an obvious agenda that only looks to the financial short term - a regular problem in the US. I laughed when she called the US steel manager a "protectionist" and an "isolationist." Hmm...didn't see those terms coming... :) And total shocker - she didn't show the Caterpillar guy any of that same loaded words.
Plus China has learned well from their biggest customer - Wal-Mart. China Steel will be cheap, cheap, cheap...until they drive out American businesses. And then their prices will rise. And we'll have no other choice...if we have any choice at all by then.
