I like Ron and agree with much of his logic but damn, get a vaccine for goodness sake. He seems to be an alarmist regarding vaccines.

Re: Ron Paul: Don't Panic Over The Swine Flu
why on earth would you buy a vaccine for what is perhaps the most rare disease in all of North America...

Those TV's can see you people anything can't they...

Fear is such a great marketing tool.

Re: Ron Paul: Don't Panic Over The Swine Flu
He says people have died from the vaccine. I've read that vaccines haven't been proven to actually work. I've read that most vaccines contain very small doses of mercury and are suspected of causing autism in children. And I've read that vaccines assasinated JFK - just kidding. It's hard to tell what information is correct and what information is not. Actually, I'm starting to think no one really knows anything about anything.

Huh. I had no idea his ass was a doctor. Went to Duke.

I will agree that this panic is overreacting. And that in 1976 the vaccine companies made a deal with the government that the government would take all responsibility for vaccine liability for swine flu problems because of the panic, and that that's been the start of something very, very bad in this country.

Flu always kills people. This is a flu. It will kill people.

What this will show us, though, is that we are terribly, terribly unprepared for a true pandemic.

What people aren't fucking realizing is that we've got a slow burn of a few pandemics going on right now.

Re: Ron Paul: Don't Panic Over The Swine Flu
Rabies, tuberculosis and malaria, to name a few. Many diseases are developing strong resistances to antibiotics, and with a massive animal reservoir, these diseases have more room to play than ever before. The risk increases exponentially with population density, and warmer climates foster disease. This is the stress point in a natural system which is much over-taxed, and the most likely candidate for whatever it is that will eventually kill us off in large numbers. You're comment sums it up very nicely: we are unprepared. I would say, suspiciously unprepared, though I know that makes me sound like a conspiracy theorist. It cannot be denied though that we could and should be doing more to prepare for the EVENTUALITY which is a major outbreak. We're such delicate things for all our pomp and boasting.

Re: Ron Paul: Don't Panic Over The Swine Flu
I agree completely. I've noticed that if the government misses a terrorist attack, we complain they didn't try hard enough. If they try harder, we complain about invasion of privacy. When the government botches a disaster (like Katrina), we complain they didn't try hard enough. When they try to prepare for a potential disaster, we complain that it is hysteria. They're damned if they do, damned if they don't. Seems nobody is ever happy.

Don't panic, but don't ignore it either.

And watch out for Super AIDS!!!

Digitalprime, that is easily the most insightful comment of the bunch.

"WHO warns swine flu threatening to become pandemic

AP

..New cases and deaths finally seemed to be leveling off in Mexico, where 160 people have been killed, after an aggressive public health campaign."

I wanna who (not WHO) is responsible for this highly inflated number and all the others who apparently can't be trusted to check facts. That's really what started the hysteria.

If you haven't seen the movie "The Host" it's all about Flu hysteria and the american media.

Re: Ron Paul: Don't Panic Over The Swine Flu
Went to add it on my Netflix, but couldn't find it. So I checked IMDB. I found a movie called The Sick House, with The Host being the UK title. I'm assuming that's what you are talking about.

Oh, THAT movie. I've been meaning to see it. I thought it was just a monster movie, that's why I thought you were referring to something else.

I later read the details of that Sick House movie and realized it wasn't it.

Re: Ron Paul: Don't Panic Over The Swine Flu
Ron's right on about this. Digitalprime - exactly - don't panic, but don't ignore it. You wouldn't ignore the regular flu, so don't ignore this.

Boogieboogieston - also right - the flu kills people. Usually as a result of poor health - i.e. the elderly - or an underdeveloped immune system, as with children who's parents sequester them from the world for fear of...everything. Or ignoring your symptoms, like Jim Henson and pneumonia. I still feel bad about that.

It's also worth noting that it's killed more people in Mexico (who's healthcare system is so bad their own government sends people up here to get hospital attention) than I'd bet it ever will here. Has anyone read the press releases at all? They admit in them that it is essentially the flu...only based upon what's happened thus far, it's a LESS lethal strain. I haven't looked it up, but aren't there several thousand people who die from the flu each year in this country?

Ejayerik - I don't think he's being alarmist or telling you you're going to die if you get a vaccine, just that some people who got the vaccine (which is sometimes a 'killed' version of the real thing) got the disease. Unfortunately, that's true of all vaccines that are 'killed' versions. They can be almost sure of the vaccine's safety, (i.e. virus 99.999% dead) but there are always exceptions to the rule. The question to ask there is how many people actually got the vaccine, and how many got the flu as a result? I'd guess the number who got sick from the vaccine and wound up dying was very, VERY small - perhaps thousandths of one percent.

Sorry for the long post, there was a lot to address.
