Re: Daily Show: Tea Party Tyranny
I shivered when he mentioned the "pear of anguish." Ugh... And again writing about it, here. I'm pretty sure I'd pick the thumb screws of the pear any day. What kind of people thought of things like that?

One of the best bits I've seen on the Daily Show. Of course if Bush were in office the story would be on the other end.

Re: Daily Show: Tea Party Tyranny
Just looked it up, didn't you? Yeah, talk about one warped definition of "Thy will be done!" But, that's what happens when the church can convince the population that they're infallible.
And, what do you mean the story would be "on the other end?"

Re: Daily Show: Tea Party Tyranny
No, I remember seeing a documentary on torture devices years ago on the History Channel and I distinctly remember the pear device. I vaguely remember hearing something about such a device in one of my classes years before that.
And my statement of "the other end" reflects my belief that if Bush were in office then the Daily Show would be doing a story on an unfair tax hike and not on those who criticize the current government.

Re: Daily Show: Tea Party Tyranny
Of course. The Daily Show covered a lot of the left protests during the Bush years and poked fun at some of the sillier folk.
The real humor here is that the right gave us 8 years of telling the left to shut up and stop being "anti-American" and now the shoe is on the other foot and they don't see the hypocracy at all.

That's the kind of attitude that tears this country apart from the inside out. I feel everything should be delt with on a case by case basis and not turned into them and us single minded mentality.

Re: Daily Show: Tea Party Tyranny
Oh, it's not single minded. I have a whole list of things all of which I have evaluated on a case by case basis.
And I know that you want to say that there is a rainbow of opinions and we're just being dominated by two parties and ect. But take a look at the parliamentary systems where there are a larger variety of voices represented and tell me it's a whole lot different.

No, I don't want to tell you there is a rainbow of options (or flavors). I am simply saying that it shouldn't be an us vs them mentality because that's not the case. Even in a party system there is commonality and I'll admit that living together in peace and all of the other fluffy junk that comes with it is easier said than done but I think that process would have a good foothold if it started in I am a human; an American human.
What your personal evaluation process entails is unknown to me. I based my comment on your written reply.

Re: Daily Show: Tea Party Tyranny
It's easy, really. And I'll use a rather simplistic example from an earlier time.
Topic: Should we go to war with Iraq?
Person 1: Yes.
Person 2: No.
There is no magical inbetween that can bring us together and make everyone happy. You either go to war, or you don't. So yes every way you splice it you can't just hug and make the problem go away.
Topic: Teaching creationism in school.
Person 1: Yes.
Person 2: No.
You can't always just have it both ways and give each other high fives at the end of the day.
I see what you're trying to get at. That we shouldn't let our differences drive us apart, but our current situation has seemed to come down to a bunch of these sort of issues. You figure it out how to make it all rainbows and flowers and I'm sure there is some sort of award out there for you.
But also, this isn't even really that bad. We made it through the 60s which were a lot hairy than this.
