Not Working?
Speedy debuted in 1953's Cat-Tails for Two, directed by Robert McKimson and RT 6:39. This early Speedy was a meaner, skinnier, rattier-looking creation with a sizable gold front tooth.
Speedy Gonzales, the fastest mouse in all of Mexico, makes his screen debut, outwits and outruns two waterfront alley cats out for some "Mexican food."

Here's one that I do not recall having ever seen before. With a little web searching, it seems that this was supposedly forbidden from the syndication outlets, though I don't find it any more racist or offensive than other cartoons of the era.

Maybe Steinbeck disapproved of the appropriation of George and "Bennie" characters.

Of Mice and Men was also a part of the era.
Bennie? Lennie?
Bennie? Lennie?

Re: Speedy Gonzalez: Cat Tails for Two
Yup, They just substituted Bennie for Lennie. Maybe Steinbeck's people still saw fit to send a "cease and desist" letter. And Speedy, he's straight out of Tortilla Flat... With a Grapes of Wrath reference, this could be the beginning of an ambitious thesis.
