Ann, I'm glad you brought up John Ashcroft and his pre-9/11 awareness of terrorists hijacking planes. But it makes no sense when you say the Cheney/Bush Administration couldn't have done anything to warn and/or increase protection of American travelers.

After 9/11, Mr. Ashcroft says he "doesn't recall" if he was ever briefed on or around July 17, 2001 about a credible threat from Al Qaeda.

Oh, but he did stop flying commercial at that same time.

About a week later on July 26, CBS News reported that" Ashcroft was traveling exclusively by leased jet aircraft instead of commercial airlines" due to a "threat assessment."

Hmm...what kinda threat assessment could that have been? ...After he was (or wasn't, ho ho ho) briefed on Al Qaeda and then stopped flying commercial? Yep, that's sure a puzzler all right. What could he have been briefed on? That's a real mystery for the ages, stringbean.

So could Ashcroft (and Bush, Cheney, etc, etc) have done something to warn the rest of us serfs about that same threat assessment? Yeah. But they kept that little tidbit for themselves. Now who benefited?

In its final budget request for the fiscal year 2003 submitted on

Sept. 10, 2001,

the Administration “called for spending increases in 68 programs, none of which directly involved counterterrorism…In his Sept. 10 submission to the budget office, Mr. Ashcroft did not endorse F.B.I. requests for $58 million for 149 new counterterrorism field agents, 200 intelligence analysts and 54 additional translators. Mr. Ashcroft proposed cuts in 14 programs. One proposed $65 million cut was for a program that gives state and local counterterrorism grants for equipment, including radios and decontamination suits and training to localities for counterterrorism preparedness.”

Indeed, great detail. In terms of the outcome and the fascistic agenda, letting it happen was no different than making it happen...
